Daddy's Cancer Diagnosis

By: Indie Skreet

Page 1, clumsily broken bad news

Daddy’s timing misjudged

When dialled his telephone

Left my mascara smudged

When caught me on my own

The ulcer was assumed

Yet rather more sinister

And in near future loomed

A religious minister

It was a winter’s day

When my father called

Toddler at play

Beside me as he crawled

Early in my pregnancy

Spouse at work he knew

Daddy had a tendency

Not to think things through

Left in shock and shaking

But soon a rap on door

There was hesitating

In midst of my outpour

His friend threw her arms round me

Had driven straight when heard

Comfort in shared misery

Did not exchange a word
