When Did

Poetry By: parkelis

How quickly, and without notice, does the earth move in its axis. This unacknowledged, un-called upon movement is similar to the the movements and currents that sway and alter the groundwork of our lives.

When did
"I hate when you do that"
Turn into
"I hate you?"
When did
The little annoyances
That drove
Uncomfortable tickles
Up my spine
And through my shoulders
Become the things I couldn't
Bear to stand?
The very things
That made me question
Raising my voice or hand?
When did
The love escape our grasp;
What vehicle
Let it waft away?
Oh, how is it
That all I seem to do
Is recall
The pleasant times
Between you and I?
Was the death of our love
Like a quickly torn-off bandage,
Without the long-lasting pain?
Or was our love
Slowly slit away at
Until it finally bled out
Of what used to be?
When did
Holding on
For each others' sake
Become our game?
In the park?
I was behind
Your favorite maple tree.
You found me effortlessly,
Played it cool,
And then out of nowhere,
Surprised me.
You grabbed me securely in your arms,
Squeezed me in close,
Took in the perfume of maple's touch
On me
And lit a smile
I thought would never fade away
Upon my face.
That was our game,
Not this,
This endless
Cycle of lies and misunderstandings,
Of never looking up
And facing reality,
Of perpetual frowns
Inscribed on the fibers
Of our face?
I blame our pair;
You taught,
I never learned,
You fought,
I never backed down,
You sought,
I never looked your way.
Life's taken one abrupt spin
Into a pathway
I wish I didn't know
As home.
