They're only Jews,
She remembered
Him once saying,

Herr Schultz, with that
Sly smile that he
Wore like a slim

Sunday suit, the
Stiff manner of
His thin body,

The nod of his
Square head. Only
Jews, as if that

Sentence were a
Dull blank cheque to
Cover the host

Of criminal
Atrocities
She witnessed that

Dark day and in
After years. And
What would have her

Being a Jew
Witness mattered
If she perished

Like millions
Had, like many
She had known who

Had vanished cold
Into the night,
Vanished into

The waiting trains,
Camps and ovens?
She knew she had

To survive to
Make being a
Witness matter,

To make some sense
Of the madness
That had almost

Engulfed her, that
Had swallowed up
So many, had

Gorged millions
Into the throat
And stomach of

Prejudice and
Hate. Remember,
Her father had

Said before he died,
What you have seen
And relate all.

Very good Terry, strong theme and I can relate as I am a lapsed Jew(being that I no longer practice the faith) but as a historian I appreciate the value of this poem. Well written.

thank you. I am often saddened by those who perpetuate the lie that the holocaust was jewish hoax. Some hoax= 6 milion dead.
