Watching him run around my yard,
his tail-wag keeping beat with the thump of his paws,
large ears erect, listening for my call.
It’s the way I remember him best-
hyper despite his age.
Agile despite his size.
thought he may not appear so.
When you approach my door he will bark,
and many a time frighten you.
He may have large teeth,
but his bark really is bigger then his bite.
When you look in his food bowl,
a collection of toys can usually be found.
Since his favorite hiding spot is right on top
of the hard brown kibble he diligently consumes.
He has no breed,
he’s one of a kind, an original,
he could never be replaced.
A mixture of breeds, classifying him a “mutt”.
He has a flat spot on his nose,
a sign from his long-gone puppyhood,
where his favorite pass-time was pushing a large flat tire,
around the yard with the tip of his nose.
He’s had many cat friends-
for a large dog he’s surprisingly gentle with small creatures.
His adopted brother a small, white Shit Zu,
who I’m sure he loves despite the constant play-fights.
I love my dog,
I’m sure that he loves me too.
As every night it’s with me he sleeps,
and I’m one of the few he graces with his kisses.
It really is a unique bond,
one of instantaneous love,
that four letter word put to good use.
But who could ever use just one word?
