Cassie Bennington awakens with a hangover-she has always prided herself on her moderation, but she had no idea just how strong that drink was, and her "friend" Dorrie talked her into no less than three! Angrily deciding that Dorrie is no friend at all, she opens her eyes--to find herself in a stranger's living room. The sofa's owner, Lucas Arnette, politely offers her coffee and a ride home. He tells her what happened last night, and Cassie is shocked to learn that someone tried to assault her. Lucas assures her that he came to her defense, and there's no need to inform the police...
But the police already know something. While Lucas drives Cassie home, Nick Firenza and David Murphy are interrogating a known drug dealer, found beaten and unconscious outside a nightclub with cocaine in his jacket. Robbie LaMarche swears the drugs were planted, but since he's not the most truthful criminal in Chicago, Firenza has his doubts. But when Robbie gives him a tip that leads to a huge drug bust and the arrest of a higly successful businessman named Arto Saroka, Firenza becomes certain that this time LaMarche is telling the truth. Saroka is a good friend and associate of Rick Chambers, now running for Governor. Firenza and Murphy begin looking forward to catching some big fish, but before he can testify, LaMarche disappears.
Scratching his head, Firenza pores over the original file. He sees that just before the beating, Robbie LaMarche was seen leaving the club with a certain young woman. Is it possible to find her? David Murphy follows the trail, hoping for answers. He meets Dorrie, who tells him all about Cassie, her pal from work who left that night with-with some guy, she doesn't know who...
Meanwhile, Cassie has come to see Lucas as a friend, and something more. But confronted by Murphy, who tells her what really happened that night, she realizes that Lucas is not what he claimed. Cassie decides to break away from him, but it is too late. Secrets safely buried are about to become known, and a man whose life depends on hiding his identity will gladly kill to protect it...
The Man in the Darkness is now available on Amazon.com both as a paperback and as a Kindle e-book.
