I eyed the blood soaked sheet that covered the large still figure that lay on the floor as I swiftly slipped under the yellow crime scene tape. I looked around; I saw how the chaos started to fill the room, E.M.T.s, medical examiner, and officers swarmed the room bagging evidence and taking pictures. I looked across the room to where my partner was standing; he looked towards me and gave me a sad look. I walked slowly towards my partner. As I approached him a woman appeared behind him. She sat with a blanket over her shoulders and a steaming coffee cup in her hand. She had a shocked look on her face. I approached my partner Det. Ryan Jennings
"What do we got here?"
"Female Julie Reynolds found by her sister Jenna Reynolds in her apartment. She had been missing for a week before she turned up."
I looked down at the body and then to Jenna's face.
"I am so sorry for your loss."
Jenna muttered, "Thanks..."
I wiped away the sadness and looked to my partner.
"Yeah, upstairs neighbor says that around 1 A.M. he heard commotion coming from downstairs but dismissed it and fell asleep."
"See what more you can find."
He nodded his head and then he began to write something down in his notepad. I walked over to the medical examiner that stood over the body with the sheet drawn up so that she could see. I walked over to her.
"What do we have here?"
"Female, 27, death by strangulation contusions on the wrists... and a "b" scratched into her back."
"The "b" killer."
I felt a sudden sense of dread as I stared down at the body of Julie Reynolds. The "b" killer had killed a total of 28 women in the past few months striking fear into the hearts of everyone in New York City. He killed in a regular pattern, 4 kills per week.
"Did you find a note? Or do think it is a copycat?"
"No note yet I'll call you if I find anything."
I shouted over to Ryan, "Meet me at the station and bring any witnesses that you find over for questioning."
He shouted back, "Ok see you there, Katie."
I kind of liked it when he called me Katie, it was a little irritating but I liked it. Ryan and I always had a special bond, we met in the academy and since then we have been friends and being partners was just the icing on the cake. I always meant to give him a nickname but I never got the right one.
I walked quickly into the hall trying to avoid any nosy neighbors. As I walked to the end of the hall I spotted a tall man in all black standing at the other end of the hallway. I glanced towards the elevator and glanced back, he was gone. I shrugged it off and continued to the elevator. Once I got to the garage I entered my black Sudan and drove to the station.
I arrived at the station later than I expected so when I got to my desk Ryan was already standing there with two coffee cups in his hand waiting for me.
"How on earth did you get here before me?!"
"I took Broadway and I stopped at Starbucks." He said as he passed me a warm paper cup filled with coffee.
I took a sip and looked at him. The taste of the coffee started to fade off my tongue. I smiled. Every time Ryan did something nice for me I always felt a little tingle in my stomach. I never knew what the feeling was but it felt good, but it was time to get serious we had a killer to catch so I shook it off and looked at Ryan.
"Did you find any more witnesses? "
"Yeah I did a couple living across the hall was coming back from a bar at around 1:30a.m. and said they both saw a tall man wearing black clothes rushing down the hall out of Jenna's apartment."
"A man in black?"
"Yeah that's right, why?"
"When I was walking down the hallway to the elevator I saw a man at the other end. He was tall and wearing black."
"Do you think the killer went back to the crime scene?"
"Maybe, check with other officers and see if anyone else saw anything at this or any other crime scene."
I pulled the chair out from under my desk then sat on it facing the window. A strand of my brown hair fell onto my cheek; I pushed it away and tucked it behind my ear.
I turned around to find my captain yelling at me from inside her office.
"The Medical Examiner wants you and Ryan in the morgue."
"Will do captain!"
I got up from my desk I took out my phone and dialed my partner. I put the phone up to my ear just in time to hear the first ring. The phone rang four times before Ryan finally picked up. On the other side of the line I hear, "Hey Katie what's up?"
"The M.E. wants us in the morgue."
"Okay I'm on my way."
