Chapter One: The Beginning..
It was difficult, at best, to keep my mind on work that day. I had stopped off at a jewelry store on my lunch break to see how the ring was coming along. I designed it myself, just for her.
My name is John, I was a detective at the local police station. It had been only three weeks since I qualified for the position. I never knew I would actually get the job when I had applied for it, though looking back now I guess I was the right person for it and I had solved a few cases since and helped on others in my spare time. My girlfriend, Christina, had just moved into my place a week ago and things had been going pretty good. We've been dating for the last year and a half and I had decided I would 'pop the question' that weekend.
"John!", my boss had startled me, "Get your ass in here, now!"
"You wanted to see me, Sir?" I said calmly as I entered his office.
"John, I'm sorry to tell you this but you are on leave as of this evening for reasons I cannot discuss with you at this time." He had said shaking his head. I could hear the hesitation in his voice.
I handed over my badge and gun. This job was one of the best things in my life, aside from Christina. As I walked out of the station, half of the people I had been working with were staring, the other half held their heads down low.
I walked outside to my truck, it was only a short distance from the door. I climbed into the driver side and stuck the key in the ignition and listened to the roar of the engine as it fired up. As I pulled out of the lot, I had my radio down low. Not like me to do that. Everyone was worried about me for some reason and I couldn't quite figure out why.
The drive home was short, though it felt like it took an eternity. When I got there, the door was already unlocked. I turned the handle and walked in, set my keys down and put my coat up like I always did. It was my daily routine when I got home. It didn't take me long to figure out that something was wrong..
"Christina?!" I called out as my voice started to sound different the more worried I got.
As I walked into the main hallway, I noticed a picture was tilted off center. I rushed all around the house looking for Christina, it was no use, she wasn't there. When I got to the bedroom, it was a mess. Everything was scattered all over the room. The pictures were knocked over, drawers pulled out of the dresser, closet doors wide open. I noticed that the window was wide open, the curtains blowing in the chilled wind coming from outside.
I had to find out what happened, I had to find Christina! But how? I was suspended from the force for reasons I was unaware..
