Attempted Newsroom Beating

Novel By: dezbee
Mystery and Crime

This is the story of two young TV reporters accused of attempted murder when they tried to beat up one of the newest colleagues, who is also a young reporter.

Even though this is a story about workplace violence, there are other surprising plots that will come out of all this. Some will actually turn the focus away from the actual beating. View table of contents...

Eyewitness News Daybreak Weekendwas still playing, but Liz and Ben went all the way to the roof and saw traffic on I-4 and SR 408 go by quietly. Liz anchored the newscast, and Ben did the weather. Ben was holding Saturday's edition of the Orlando Sentinel.

"Man," he said, putting his hand on Liz's shoulder, "the weekend news is kinda bad when all they have was either about Kirk, Daralene, or George."

"Kirk and Daralene ruined us," Liz said without looking at Ben, "and what they did to George was almost inexcusible."

"Well, they only did it to get him off the weekday morning shift," Ben told her, looking at the newspaper, "they should've gone to Bob and not get us on the papers out there. I mean, what would happened if they hadn't done what they did?"

"They don't have the balls to..." Liz looked at the newspaper Ben was holding. "What did it say," she asked him.

"Reporter bullies nowhere to be found," he said, flashing the Orlando Sentinel.

"So, what are they doing? Travelling and having a good time while George suffers?"

"That was when they had sex."

"I know," Liz grabbed the newspaper from Ben's hands, "and they have shown no concern for George. That's a shame."

While Liz read the newspaper, Amber and Sharon were on hand waking George up from a good night's sleep. He got up and yawned and he saw what he called two of the most beautiful women ever -- his mom and his girlfriend.

"Hey, guys," he said.

"You alright, babe," Amber asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine," he said, still half-asleep.

"George," Sharon asked him, "do you want anything for breakfast?"

George looked at his mother in the eyes. "An all-american breakfast would be nice," he said.

"Okay," Sharon said, accepting the offer. She kissed her son on the forehead and left. Amber stayed back with George.

"Did you get any good sleep," she asked him.

"Yeah," he told her, "I feel great, but I still need that..."

"Yeah, I know," she said. "I'll go join your mom in the kitchen."

"Okay," George said as Amber left the room. He grabbed his laptop and logged in to the WFTV website. He checked in his mailbox and he has 34 new messages from his on air colleagues, 148 more from off air colleagues, and hundreds more from his viewers and fans. Meanwhile, Liz and Ben returned to the studios to find newspaper headlines from across the website. They started digging through them, but don't know where to begin.

"Why are we doing this," Liz asked one of the directors.

"We'll be reading them on air," he told her.

"That makes sense."

"Is the camera on," Ben asked.

"Not yet," the cameraman told him. Ben and Liz looked over at some of the newspaper clips.

"It hasn't been the same since," Ben told Liz.

"I know," Liz said, looking at the Miami Herald newspaper headline. "It looked like all the newspapers are taking George's side."

"Yes, especially his hometown paper the San Antonio Current. But the Spokane Spokesman-Review took Kirk's side instead."

"What?"

"They think George is lying. And look at the Memphis Daily News. The city hated Daralene so much, they called the attack on George 'a violent attack from Jones waiting to happen', and the newspaper is throwing their support behind George."

"Ha! I knew that would happen."

Meanwhile, George walked downstairs and saw Sharon, Amber, and Dave preparing breakfast.

"What's up, guys," he asked.

"It's all ready," Amber said, putting the plates on the table, and her arms around him. "You ready," she asked him in a sexual manner.

George looked at the food on the table and then at Amber.

"Yeah," he said to her in a sexual manner, but backed out, "I'm ready to eat." He moved her out of his way and sat down. She was pissed, but sat next to him.

Time: 9:30a

With most of the reporters off for the weekend (but still on call because it is a 24-hour thing), some of the reporters have decided to visit George before the vigil that is to be held in his honor and check up to see how he is feeling.

"Hey, George," a voice called out, surprising him and Amber. Gustavo, Steve, Jeff, Darrell, Robert, Eric, and Vanessa came in and joined them.

"Hi, guys," George asked while changing the channel on his TV, "what are you doing here?"

"Well," Steve said, taking a seat on a bean bag chair (wait, George has that?), "we want you and Amber to be the last people to know that we're holding a vigil right outside your home in about a half an hour."

"Really," George asked, "No one told me about it."

"He did say 'last people'," Amber told him.

"Sure," he replied.

"So, are you okay so far," Robert asked.

"A little," George told him, "but I'm getting there. My bruises are almost gone and I'm getting stronger, but I'm still in a rollercoaster. And I appreciate what you guys are doing, and it makes me feel much better that I got people behind me as I recover from this unimaginable crime."

"Have you guys found them yet," Amber asked the group.

"Nope," Darrell told her, "we didn't have any luck last night."

"I heard my dad went with you guys last night," George said. Everyone was stunned and stared at each other.

"He didn't tell you," Eric asked.

"No, but now that you mentioned it, I know why he's doing this, so there's no need to ask."

George fell backwards on his bed. "So, who's speaking," he asked.

"We all have our statements right here," Jeff replied.

"It's just that we don't know who's speaking at the vigil," Vanessa added.

"Will you go, babe," George asked Amber.

"Aww, sweetie," she said, "Of course I'll be there." She kissed him on the forehead.

"I want to tell everyone that, just in case I don't get the chance," George said, "that I want to thank them for their support. I'm still full of emotion, but just in case, any one of you, tell them I still need help."

Time: 10a

On airs, off airs, viewers, fans, and George's family and friends gathered in George's backyard to hold a vigil in his honor. A huge circle was formed with Amber, Sharon, Dave, Ginny, Warren, and Kate near the wall and everyone else around the circle. Darrell made his way to the front of the crowd and spoke to fellow prayers. What they didn't know is that George is above them in the balcony overseeing the vigil.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Darrell began, "It's been a rough 72 hours since our dear friend was beaten by two heartless colleagues. It was also 72 hours of grief, chaos, and the scandal that followed. It's been 72 hours since we became the news. It's also been 72 hours since Kirk and Daralene ran off, leaving George in pain. But within all that time, a lot of us at Channel 9 pulled together to help George get back to normal. Many of us got to know George since he moved here about 5 months ago. We can all say he has a personality that will make everyone be friends with him. We can all say he is one of the brightest young journalists in America. We can all say he has an advantage to make it to the top of the journalism world. Then 72 hours ago, Kirk and Daralene, who are in the same boat as George is, tried to end all that, tried to cut his life short, all over a reporting spot on Eyewitness News Daybreak. How can a reporting spot on our morning newscast would generate a brutal beating? It seemed to me that the couple has either a fanatical approach when it comes to waking up at 2:15 in the morning or that Vanessa, Greg, Brian, David, Gustavo, and Sean are nicer than the rest of us. But one thing's for sure... they tried to end George's lifelong journey. Thank you."

Then Vanessa walked to the front of the crowd. "Central Florida," she said, "was brought toits knees when George was almost killed. Following the attack, we had trouble reporting on major stories, and at the same time, we too would like to report to our viewers on how George felt. We loved him and we embraced him when he came down here. Channel 9 was one of the hotbeds to make a big shift in the journalism career. I mean, anyone who has worked at Channel 9 would be having high expectations when it comes to reporting the news. No one knew it would happen like this until it was too late. We all came here to sharpen our careers and a lot of us know that Kirk and Daralene want to do that, but they felt like George was a threat, and that's why they tried to kill him. How could they say he's a threat when he just want to expand his career. All three are on the line now, but only George will be saved."

"We have known Kirk and Daralene for about a year," Jeff told the crowd, "We've known George for only 5 months. What made Kirk and Daralene think they can grab whatever weapon they have and kill George on the spot when he did nothing wrong? We shouldn't quickly point out that a reporting spot on Eyewitness News Daybreak was the only factor."

"I know first hand what it was like to have a reporting spot on our morning newscast," Gustavo said, "I had many colleagues come and gone while I held my place. There are three reporting spots in the morning, I have one and from time to time, two reporters would join me. Kirk and Daralene were great. George was, too. And watching this unfold broke my heart because of all things that happened in the nearly six years I've been here, this was the worst."

"A lot of us were hurt when George became the news," Sharon said, speaking of her son, "Dave and I were nearly as crushed as anyone else when the police came to our door and told us our son was beaten in the newsroom."

Tim was holding the station microphone to his chest, and the cameraman next to him filmed the whole thing.

"Do you think this vigil will be over by the time I start editing," Tim asked.

"I don't know," his photographer replied, "With the lineup the way it is, we can only do so much for a short time before the 12 o'clock news."

"I figure that. I guess we'll do a live report while this is going on."

"Don't you have anything to say up there?"

"No, but I know why people are doing this. It's all for George."

"Ladies and gentlemen," Amber told the crowd, "family, friends, colleagues, viewers, we would like to thank you for the vast amount of support you gave to George during the most difficult time. I understand that some of you have personal stories of anything similar to what George went through. I understand some of you have stories about George that people don't know about or find amusing. But all of us can share this gathering and remembered it as one huge community that pulled together after what happened on Wednesday. I can tell that coming down from New York, all the problems that were happening at the timedidn't matter now. The only thing it matters is that we are in for one battle and one battle only, and that is to bring the two colleagues that beat him to justice. But for now, thanks for coming."

"That's it," Tim asked.

"Yeah," his photographer Tom said, "were you waiting for a more dramatic ending?"

"No, I'm just shocked."

"Hi," Amber greeted, walking towards Tim and Tom. "You're putting this on the news?"

"Yes," Tim said, "I'm Tim and this is Tom, you must be Amber."

"Yes," Amber said, "I'm just here for the weekend to see how George is doing."

"So, how do you know him?"

"He's my former colleague."

"Wait, you're from News 12?"

"Yeah, in New York, and George is a very sweet guy. It's much different after what happened. I gotta get going."

Amber left, but Tim wanted one more info.

"Wait, Amber," he shouted, "I didn't get your last name."

"It's Noggle," she turned around,"N-O-G-G-L-E," she shouted back and left.

"What did she say," Tim asked Tom.

"Noggle," Tom said, "I know someone with that name."
