"It's a beautiful day, huh?" I asked, trying to start a conversation wih Adam.
"Yeah," he said. I followed his gaze toward Stephanie, who was running to a swing on the playground.
"So, why aren't you at the cabin?" I asked casually as I watched my little girl swinging. Adam looked at me, his eyes dark and tired.
"I'm done hiding," he said slowly.
"Then why don't you go home?" I asked.
"I can't," he said, looking at the ground.
"Why not?" I asked. He looked up at me, his eyes swelling with tears.
"Can we talk about this somewhere else?" He said, sadness filling his cracked voice. I slowly nodded my head.
"At least tell me this. Why did you come to me?" I asked.
"Because you're the only one that seems to care," he said slowly and cautiously.
"Don't you have any other friends?" I asked. He hesitated.
"Hey Zoey," says a voice from behind us. I turn around to see my friends standing behind the bench. I fake a smile. I was hoping to talk to Adam without any interruptions.
"Hey guys," I said weakly.
""Who's this?" asks Collin as he steps around to stand in front of us. He held a smug smile on his face.
"My name is Adam," Adam said quietly, his gaze towards the ground.
"Nice to finally meet you," says Ronnie.
"Finally?" asks Adam as he looked up, confusion strewn about in his eyes.
"Yeah. Zoey over here wouldn't stop talking about how cute Adam is," says Collin, trying to hold back a laugh. Adam looked at me, my face flushed with embarressment, looking for an answer.
"I n-never said that," I said, stammering over my words. Adam slightly smiled, his cold eyes warming up. I smiled as I looked into his warm eyes that seemed to be sinking in a depressed state. Ronnie sat in between us and looked at Adam.
"She's totally in love with you," said Ronnie. I punched his arm as hard as I could and Ronnie snickered.
"Shut up," I whispered harshly. Ronnie looked at me smiling widely, his soft brown eyes stinging through my black eyes.
"What? It's not like he can't tell already," Ronnie said. I glared at him as Stephanie ran up to him.
"Hi, Ron," she said.
"Hey kiddo, what's up?" he said as she grabbed his fingers and pulled him to the playground.
"He's got a point, Zoe," Lucy said.
"No he doesn't, and if he did, then it would be that he is an idiot," I said defensively.
"Hey, I'm gonna go now, Zoey," Adam said. I let out a sigh.
"Okay, but can we talk later?" I said. He nodded as he got up from the bench. I watched him walk away as Lucy continued to talk. I blocked her out when I started to think about what it would be like to kiss his full lips, hold his soft hands and wrap my arms around him every day. I yearned to be with him and the thought of being away from him was killing me.
I got up from the bench and started walking to Adam when I felt someone grab my wrist and pulled me down.
"Did you hear a single word I said?" Lucy asked as I turned toward her.
"What?" I asked.
"I said don't waste your time with him. I've seen his type before. They seem interested and then, all of a sudden, they rip your heart out. It hurts, Zoey. Bad." she said.
"Yeah. And the worst part is, they don't even care that you're in pain. Trust me, I'm a guy," said Collin.
"He's different, though. I can tell," I told them as I got up from the bench and headed to the playground. "Come on, Steph. It's time to go."
"Okay, mommy," she said as she waddled toward me. I picked her up and carried her home.
