A bustling metropolis overshadowed by crime and corruption, Kingsburg was a city like any other. And at the heart of it all was McKinley's Pub on Boulevard and 5th. Jack C. McKinley played both sides of the crime war, though he favored the cops. It's here in McKinley's pub that one will find the most unlikely, but by no means unskilled, detective sitting hunched over his glass of scotch in a drunken stupor.
"I think you've had enough for tonight, Donovan," Jack said wiping down the bar and starting to lock the joint up for the night.
"Damn it Jack, I know my limits," growled the disgruntled detective.
"Business been rough lately?" Jack mentioned nonchalantly.
"What do you think!" shouted Donovan in reply. "Office has been set up for months now and only cases I've gotten are stupid domestic affairs. Isn't a single man in this damn city faithful to his wife anymore?"
"Hey, at least the pay's allowing you to afford that ramshackle apartment of yours and come to my bar everyday," Jack said smirking.
"You've got the best stuff for miles," Donovan remarked raising his glass to Jack.
"You know all that whiskey isn't good for you, I think you're just trying to forget something," replied Jack.
"Well if you saw the things I saw, you'd be doing the same," grumbled Donovan.
"Donny, you've got to let those things go or they'll consume you."
"So what are you, f***ing Confucius?!?" boomed Donovan, dashing his glass to the ground.
"No, but I'm your friend and I'm just looking out for you is all," Jack said innocently, sweeping up the shards of glass.
"Well you can just quit it, I'm fine, okay?"
Jack sighed. He knew this conversation wasn't going anywhere and Donovan would talk when he was ready.
"Alright, fine just clean yourself up and clear out, I'm closing for the night," said Jack, putting down his broom and hustling Donovan out to the door.
"Okay, okay," Donovan said, stumbling. "Oh and uh, give my regards to Alice."
"Will do, Donny, and be careful, don't want those cops putting you in the clinker for public intoxication, do you?" Jack called after him.
"Yeah…right, you'd think after all that time in the force, I'd a gotten some respect!" Donovan shouted back, sauntering down the street to his apartment.
Jon Jesse Donovan's his name. He was formerly known as the finest cop in all of Kingsburg. He even made it to the rank of sergeant, keeping the mean streets clean of crime. In his prime, Sgt. Donovan busted crime lords and drug dealers alike, but his hot-headed recklessness and take-no-prisoners mentality pegged him as a "renegade". It wasn't long before the chief of police had him turn in his badge. Since then, J.J. Donovan set up his own private eye firm on 5th St., just down the block from his favorite pub, in the run-down part of town known to all as Devil's Junction. During his time on the force, Donovan had always gotten his best leads from McKinley, as the man was extremely well connected. It also helped that McKinley's had the best booze in all Kingsburg.
