Temptation

By Joseph Logsdon

Nick Brown wanted to cheat on his wife. As a young man, Nick made the decision to never break his moral principles. However, he soon grew tired of his loyalty to all that was good and righteous. Nick longed for his lust and passion to come to life. Throughout most of his average life, Nick had been a simple dentist. Dentistry was not the most interesting job in the world, but it paid well and allowed Nick the opportunity to obtain an attractive wife. Nick loved his wife with all his heart, but she did not love him. She hated him and would actively see other men late at night. Nick knew about her lust for men and suffered because of that lust.

Nick wanted to get revenge on his wife by showing her that he could also go against his own moral beliefs. It was late in the afternoon when Mr. Brown made the decision to contact a filthy and immoral prostitute. Nick was seeing his last customer for the day when his guilt began to consume the very world around him. Martin Silverman had been coming to see Nick about his teeth for years and was the only person that he could trust.

"I hope you have a good night," Silverman said as he prepared to leave the office.

Nick wanted to tell Martin about his plan to have an affair, for the guilt of not telling was too much for him to bear.

"Can I tell you something?" Nick asked.

Martin happily walked towards Nick and looked him straight in the eye.

"What is it?"

"I'm going to cheat on my wife."

Martin looked shocked as Nick confessed his intentions in the cold and silent office.

"Why are you telling me this?" he asked.

"I honestly cannot say. Martin, I'm a good man and I don't want anyone else to know about this."

"Who else would I tell?"

"My daughter must never know. It's bad enough that her mother leaves her with me every night so she can go out and fuck other men. I hate her, Martin!"

Nick began to cry as he thought about all the pain and heartbreak that his wife had caused him.

"I'm here for you, Nick. My wife left me five years ago and I never got over it. When I was a boy, my father said that I wouldn't amount to anything. When I got older, I proved him wrong by getting a scholarship. To be perfectly honest, I just sat there and relished in the fact that I was a black man. I was making a lot of money by the time I was twenty, but at what cost? I lost my individualism and my pride."

"What's your point, Martin?"

"My point is that you and I have wasted our lives. I never wanted to become a lawyer. However, my father wanted me to support the family and I had no choice. In many ways, both of us have boring jobs and lives. Nick, I want you to have that affair."

"Why?"

"You need to try something different and radical."

"Is it really all right?"

"It's time that you felt the warmth and tenderness of another woman."

"You're right, Martin."

Marin politely smiled and left the room as Nick prepared himself for a new romance. Nick became anxious and nervous as the night continued. As time went on, footsteps could be heard walking towards the door.

"Come on in!" Nick shouted.

To Nick's surprise, the janitor came walking through the door. He was an older man and he looked very poor. Nick was surprised to see him and felt slightly nervous as he was being approached.

"Good evening, Mr. Brown."

"What are you doing here so late?" Nick asked.

"I overheard your conversation with Mr. Silverman."

"You did?"

"Why are you going to cheat on your wife, Mr. Brown?"

"That's none of your business."

Nick began to perspire and pant as he was being confronted by a poor and elderly man.

"You do not have to be afraid of me. Mr. Brown, I know things have not been going very well in your life and I know that you feel that sleeping with another woman will calm your pain. To be perfectly honest, physical pleasure will heal your pain for a time. However, you will soon feel guilty and your moral beliefs will come back to destroy you."

The elderly man stared at Nick for a moment and proceeded to place his hand on his shoulder. Nick was speechless and could not believe that an old and frustrated man would know the secrets of the human soul.

"Who are you?" Nick asked.

"I am what I am, for what else could I be?"

Nick suddenly felt that God was judging him, that the entire world was judging him. Tears fell down his face and all the guilt in the world entered his heart.

"I feel so ashamed. I don't want to cheat on my wife, not even if she is being unfaithful to me and my children. Sir, what should I do? What should I say?"

"Do you love your family?"

"Yes."

"Go back to your family and try to reconcile with you wife. She is not perfect and she is not pure. Mr. Brown, go to her and love her as a pure woman. The hate that you have will disappear in time and the love that you once had for her will return."

Nick paused and thought about the words that had been spoken to him. In that moment, he realized that he could never betray his faith.

"I think you should go."

"Thank you."

Nick proceeded to walk towards the door. However, he was stopped by the appearance of his wife. She was standing in the doorway and she had a blank expression on her face.

"What are you doing here?" Nick asked.

Nick's wife looked terrified and all color died within her face.

"Are you the man who called me?"

Nick was horrified to come to the conclusion that his wife was the prostitute that he had contacted over the phone. His heart skipped a beat and his muscles tensed as the world he knew dissolved before his eyes.

"Honey, please don't get the wrong idea!" Nick shouted.

"I can't believe you thought cheating on me would somehow make us even. Nick, I have sex with other men because I'm sick and I can't control myself. I never wanted to hurt you or our children."

The troubled woman walked across the room and fell into her husband's arms. She cried and screamed into the darkness of the night. To Nick's surprise, the elderly man was no longer in the vicinity. He had gone and had permanently changed the life of Nick Brown forever.
