Wal-Mart, a store that has almost everything and where there are “Always low prices…Always.” it’s a place people go to, to get everything they need all at the same place, but for teenagers it could be a place to hang out with friends.
When someone is ready to ring up, they get in a line and when it’s there turn, the cashier will usually say something like “How are you?” The response is usually “fine” or “good” and they finish ringing the person up, the person pays, gets their stuff, and goes to their car and that’s that. That cashier is never thought of again.
However, that wasn’t the case for one young girl. Dawn, a 17 year old who loves country music, singer Brad Paisley, concerts, and collecting CD’s couldn’t forget one particular cashier.
At that time she didn’t care what store she was in Wal-Mart, Target, or Kmart as long as it had an electronic section she was happy. She never even cared if she went to the store in her town or not. Though she was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia she now lived in Hampton, Virginia. The Hampton Wal-Mart wasn’t known to be the best one in the area, in fact people called it the “Ghetto mart,” but again Dawn didn’t care. Also, when ever she went out she always wore her cowboy hat and boots, she was country and proud of it.
On May 23, 2007 she went to Wal-Mart probably thinking it would be like any other day there, but as it would turn out her life would never be the same again after this day.
She walked in through the doors on the right, on the food side like always. Headed towards the electronics leaving her mom behind as usual, but today something caught her eye in the clothes department. It was a jean skirt with a flower on it, she grabbed her size then started looking at shirts, found one of them she liked that had a horse on it that said “every girl loves a horse.” she got that in her size and thought to herself she would talk her mom into buying her that outfit.
She finally made it back to the electronics’ and went straight to the country CD’s. She started fixing the CD’s like she always did, making sure there were no rap or any other CD’s mixed with the country and that Brad’s CD’s were where they should be. She wasn’t there long before her mom caught up with her and right after that she heard someone else speaking to her to her left. It was an employee who worked back there, a really tall guy with blonde hair and most likely blue eyes. When he spoke he said “you were here yesterday,” Dawn replied back “yes I was.” Then he said “because you’re the only one who wears that kind of hat” as he pointed to her straw cowboy hat. He started to talk with them for a while and asked if he could help with anything to which Dawn said “Nah, just looking.” Of course Dawn never needed help when it came to CD’s, she always knew what she was looking for or how to find a CD she didn’t already have that was a decent price that she could talk her mom into buying. She already had over 400 CD’s, she loved her collection and loved getting more. They talked a bit longer and he asked their names, Dawn’s mom’s name was Joan. Not long after that the conversation was over and he started to walk away, that’s when Dawn said “wait, what’s your name?” She had glanced at his nametag at one point and knew it started with an A, but wasn’t totally sure what it was. He turned back around and quickly covered his nametag, that’s when she said “I think it’s Andrew,” he uncovered his nametag and nodded his head yes.
Dawn and her mother headed to the front, bought the outfit and left. Within 30 minuets she had forgotten about Andrew, to her at that time he was just some dude who talked to her in Wal-Mart. She didn’t pay attention to his looks or thought if he was cute. After all she was crazy in love with Brad Paisley and had been for four and a half years. She couldn’t just forget about him even though while she was in love with Brad she had liked someone else. He was a DJ on her all time favorite radio station, he more or less was just someone she could actually see in person and get hugs from, 18 hugs to be exact, not that she counted them or anything. After a while he wound up getting promoted to another station that was rock, to her that was more of a down grade not a promotion. During that time Brad always remained her #1 love. So what if he was married and had a child, celebrities got divorced all the time. She wouldn’t think in a million years that she could ever love anybody as much as Brad. Well, a million years came sooner than she thought.
The next time she went to that Wal-Mart she didn’t think about, look for, or see Andrew, she was just there to do her thing and leave. However, the time after that he saw her first and striked up a conversation in which she asked how tall he was and he answered 6”3‘. Sometime during that talk Dawn was starting to noticed him and realized he was cute and that his smile was to die for. That day decided that she wouldn’t be coming just for the CD’s anymore, and Target and Kmart were out of the question along with other Wal-Mart’s.
When she was there the following time, on June 9, 2007 she was thinking it’d be nice to have a picture of him. So she took out her cell phone and told him she wanted a picture. He began to play a game and started running around the electronic section so she couldn’t get the picture, it was almost like he was flirting. He finally stood still, smiled and let her take it, which became her new wallpaper on her phone.
Days after that was the last day of school, so the following day they returned to Wal-Mart, Dawn’s way of celebrating. She walked back to the electronics, it really wasn’t a long walk, but it felt like it to her. This time she saw him first, she got behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around and said “hey” then she began to tell him how the day before had been the last day of school. To which he said “all right!” and he stuck his hands out palms up so she could give him a low five, then she flipped her hands palms up so he could do the same. The feel of his hands on hers was the highlight of her day, besides not having to get up at 6:30 in the morning for school.
