Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) is a sandbox-style action adventure video game. It is the ninth in the GTA series and first in its fourth generation. GTA4 was released worldwide for both PS3 and XBox 360.
-
Story: Niko Bellic is a Serbian immigrant and a veteran of the Bosnian War, who, comes to Liberty City on advice of his cousin Roman. Niko finds Roman had misguided him and was in debt. Niko helps Roman and tries to make a new life for himself.
-
Actually Niko came to Liberty City to search for the person, who betrayed his old army unit: Florian Cravic. Niko ties up with Liberty City Bratva through Vladimir Grabov. He makes friends with Mikhail Faustin and Dimitri Rascalov. Niko completes jobs for Faustin before joining Dimitri's plot to betray Faustin and take over the organization. .
-
Niko assassinates Faustin on Dimitri's orders. Dimitri betrays Niko and that he is with Rodislav Bulgarin, a former employer of Niko. Little Jacob rescues Niko but Dimitri escapes.
-
Niko meets Roman and the two find both Roman's apartment and taxi depot in flames. They escape to Bohan, after receiving death threats from Dimitri. Roman wants to propose to his girlfriend Mallorie. Niko makes more allies and money and finds Florian has changed his name to Bernie Crane. He discovers Bernie is not responsible for his unit's betrayal but maybe Darko Brevic.
-
U.L.Paper, a government agency that had forced Niko to help them along with mobster, Jon Gravelli locate Darko in Bucharest and bring him to Liberty City. Niko confronts Darko. The player is then left with the option of either executing Darko or sparing his life. Finally, Niko relaxes at a bar when Jimmy Pegorino asks him to obtain a shipment of heroin for him that he can sell to a buyer: Dimitri Rascalov. ,
-
None of the earlier characters are featured in GTA4 as they are all dead. GTA4 also features a soundtrack. Downloadable content is available. It is structured similarly to previous games in the series. It consists of a third-person shooter and a driving game. The open, non-linear environment allows players to explore and choose how they wish to play the game.
-
It is possible to have multiple active missions. The gunfight system has been reworked to a better third-part scheme. Stealing a parked car will now show Niko breaking the glass and hotwiring it to drive it.
-
Mobile phone use has been expanded to perform multiple actions. The game also features several different in-game databases. GTA4 is the first console game in the series to include online multiplayer, with 15 modes of play available and also several different game modes. The game also includes a variety of racing and co-operative modes.
-
GTA4 is a major commercial and critical success universally. It broke all sales records on its first day of sales in Canada and other countries and has received positive reviews. Some critics say it does not deserve so much praise and that it is not perfect. A few had issues with friendly AI and use of cover, and criticized the ease with which Niko can lose his wanted level. Sometimes the game freezes, thus making it unplayable. MADD and other organizations have also criticized the game.
-
But are there any flaws – NONE whatsoever. Even with the help of a microscope, a flaw will remain undetected. Probably, any game aficionado will sit glued to GTA 4 till the next version arrives. Until then, this will have to do. Gaming was never this thrilling.

I like the story for a movie....

hi! corujuka. thanx for liking the story. ;-)

Sorry these games should make their way to the trash bin. drugs, beating up hookers, stealing cars, shooting at cops what more could a child ask for.

Just my opinion. Nothing more.

hi! skyfi. here the demand is exceeding supply and that points to something. i agree with u, for all the violence portrayed, it should be consigned to trashbin, but that's just not happening. play it and see - it'll blow u over. ;-)

I agree with Bowtie there. This right here is what's wrong with our kids today. Not only do they get to see violence on the news and television, but they also get to be a part of it in some stupid game. What ever happened to Tetris??

hi! amber. thanx. i agree with u totally here. i (as much as most of us) play for the fun, thrill and excitement. and i guess, with an increase in competition, the developers r trying to do daring and different stuff. i won't call it stupid for kids r extremely discerning today. if this game didn't deserve merit, it won't occupy sale space neither eyeballs. ;-)

I like the story, even through I don't play videogame.

These review kinda make me wish i was a bit more into video games....though its kinda hard to develop the interest at my age. I like the story behind it though!

hi! whitehart. thanx for liking the story. u'll develop a fetish. find a friend interested in games and u'll be on a wonder trip. ;-)

It's cool if you enjoy the story and it works for you I have absolutely no problem with that, but growing up in Brooklyn you see this everyday and I wonder "my god how can people do this to one another." and then many years later your turned on your head when someone turn it into a video game. Then to see or hear critics say this is "original" or "fresh" or even worse "hip?" when all you had to do is look out of your window and save myself 50 or 60 bucks and not buy the game.

Before anyone says “freedom of speech” or “if you don’t like it don’t buy it” Mantra my point is that game makers take the easy way out to sell games. Instead of taking time out to create a real game they throw in as much nudity, gallons of blood, mindless violence and foul language into a game to make it sell, end result? Well just look at the news or read the paper…you get the idea. I understand that it is up to the parents to define right from wrong but my geeze its an up hill battle in a hurricane when the parents have to work 8+ hours a day to make ends meet.

I grew up in the days of the Sega Master system up to the xbox360 so I’m no anti video game person by any means but even in the heydays of “Wolfenstein” or “DOOM” there were some lines you just did not cross.

hi! skyfi. the reality u point to is so very true. but look at the reality in sales. developers r bringing forth the games to snatch the eyeballs and this one far excels. it was like crazy in canada on first day of its release. although it is about stealing cars, most of us go for the thrill and adventure rather than the crime by itself. ;-)

Grand Theft Auto 4 was one of my brother's. I never played it though. Nice game review.

hi! if. ask ur brother how did he like it. ;-)

Seriously.
This was the game to steal the #1 "best game of all time" from "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time," which is extremely prestegious, if anything.

Everything is so realistic in the game, I have to say. It's insane. Much better than its predecessors.

Good job. ;P

hi! vicarious. thanx. i agree it is insane. ;-)

I agree is Vicarious.

This video game is really a feat for video game developers. Everything in the game is extremely realistic, even how the cars dent. This game is also the best selling game by far…..a good thing? Probably not if parents by this game for their little kids not knowing what it is. But any way you cut the cake, it’s still an amazing feat to be accomplished, and so amazing in the first week of its release it flew off the shelves.

hi! p. many still play ff, it's still hot but new games r being grabbed like hot cakes. so to everyone their own. ;-)

i know very little about this video game
and i would sorta like to keep it that way
i mean...it's about stealing peoples cars and destroying things....plus i've heard there are thing you can download from it such as porn
i don't know if my information is wrong, but i still don't like the stealing and destroying parts
cuz whether we like it or not, once an idea is in our head...it usually stays there.
and thoughts become actions

hi! gigi. i agree with u stealing is bad but games are developed and played for the thrill, excitement and the real-like experience they offer to the gamers. but i'd advice u to STEAL - OUR HEARTS. even u'd enjoy this stealing. ;-)

Grand theft auto. The entire series is aw some, I habe vice city on my PS2 and Lebrety city stories on computer, I've beaten all of them and still play them. The amount of freedom is what i love, If im bored i can spen 30 minuets in a police hold up, it passes the tame.

Everyone bags the series coz ' it teaches kid s violence', Everything teaches kids violence, ANd it better i relive stress bu shooting a pixilated hooker then shooting a real kid!

Hey, nice work with the review! You did a good job with explaning the plot, and will make people moe interested, and want to go try the game out for themselves. Even though I myself don't think it's the kind of game I'd be interested in, you opened my eyes to the possibilities. :)

hi! ms. i can understand, u'll think of all violence and stealing. but the game rests on its realistic visuals, thrill, adventure and the high it provides. ;-)

I've always assumed that this was one of those violent games that influence people to do stupid and harmful things, but I think that just depends on how easily these sort of thoughts can seep into one's mind. I think my brother plays the game, so it's probably sitting around the house. Your review makes me want to try it!

hi! cathy. try it and u'll know what it is all about. stealing and violence r part of it but that doesn't encourage u to do that. u'll like the game for the thrill it offers. ;-)

The thing that most people don't understand about the GTA games is that they AVIDLY reflect how modern our world is. Everything in the GTA games is REAL and IS NOT a fantasy.

Just because there's violence in the game doesn't mean it should be throwed away. There's violence outside, so does that mean we shouldn't leave our homes? No. It doesn't mean we should leave our homes.

I think my analogy speaks for itself. :)

ugh i can't stand that game. about 6 years ago it was extremely popular where i lived. i dont know if it was the first one or one of the later ones. but this stupid game influenced much of the violence going on. i never understood the craze for it. i personally think its the most absurd game... and not to mention ridiculously violent. i'm not against it completely. i'm not saying get rid of the game. i just wish there was more control over who played it because i know the game is very influential on younger people. but let's get real. this world we live in could never control that. sad, sad world.

ha ok. i'm done ranting now.

a nice review. good work bubbly

hi! alice. GTA4 portrays violence and is about stealing but it doesn't advises it. the game is one to be played to know what it is all about. i've seem many movies about car thefts etc but i watch them for fun and entertainement. similarly, these games r for the high they offer. rest, who cares. ;-)

I hate soccer moms... they are the most stupid kind of people on earth... and at the same time i dont get into gta games.
Like people have already said; its a modern thing, one that is trying to be realistic. But seriously, why make it more realistic? Arent we playing games to escape reality? How far will this realistic quality go?
Sales are high for these games, and it bothers me, but only because i know countries use war for their economic benefit. I dont like to fuss about sales and crap like that. In the end people die so other can get money, and THAT is the most realistic part of the game. Weapons play a vital role in the economy of countries. I consider this game a weapon against our future generations. But i dont blame the children and i dont blame the developers. Its considered art, and you can get away with almost anything if you say its art. Thats the world we live in. It would be stupid to say this is a rubbish piece of a game. Because we are all writers here and we are artists too. I DO blame the parents though.
No matter what game comes out its the responsibility of the parents to decide what their children are exposed to. I am not stupid though. I am a very open minded person. I am completely aware that the news exposes them to things like this everyday anyway. But i guess news isnt made for entertainment. When you are being exposed in the form of a game... its different. Lives are lost... its not fun.

Dont think either that i havent played the game. Like i said i am an open minded person. I never say anything before i have had time to make my own opinion. I played gta liberty stories just yesterday. Why? Because i was bored. But i dont spend my time trying to kill hookers. Instead i amuse myself by sending bikes off the biggest ramps i can find. So yeah. I have played every gta until now and have enjoyed them. But i never played enough to get into the darker side of it all.

They get boring anyway. Once you have done evrything you can it loses its re-playability. So in my opinion i think i will end up playing this game at least once, but i would quickly lose interest.

And i dont like the people that pay too much attention to detail. Its annoying. Its not about how pretty it looks, its about the gameplay. So this to me would seem the same as every other gta that has been made.
I can dent a car, whoopie... if i hit another car im sure it would dent too.

Being open minded i prefer first person shooters. But i only play the ones that have no historical significance. Like i said, people want to escape from reality, not relive wwII. Out of respect i dont play those games. But i do play things like halo and other wacky sci fi games hahaha. But like punishment i have a flavour for fantasy. Its my genre, and im sure this is someone elses ^^

I dont like gta, it is amusing but not amazing. And before anyone wants to get smart with me because theyre gta freaks; I have played it and i agree with you, 'if you dont like it dont play it' :)

It doesnt teach you appreciation for life like other games do. Final Fantasy is very influential on people and me, because the storylines always have something to do with deciding to what extent you would sacrifice all you have for the future of life. It doesnt bother me that people dont like Final Fantasy. I try to show a neutral stance on everything^^

Keep doing these reviews. I like discussing them^^

hi! lionheart. u've hit the nail on its head, "games r an escape from reality." and reality aroung us is more cruel than these games. it took me sometime to go through ur comment but i enjoyed it. most of the movies portray violence, that doesn't make us one. v watch them for entertainment. likewise, games give us thrill so why add more meaning to them. play them for what they offer. ;-)

hi! . thanx a lot for ur comment. GTA4 is cool, eh! ;-)

I enjoyed gta 4 for the first couple hours before becoming kinda bored with it. the ability to venture off and do your own thing, killing cops and stealing cars is fun, but the story is boring, and not really too exciting. just a few exciting missions sandwiched between paperwork and running errands.

as far as the whole "bad for kids" thing goes, they are right. it is bad for kids, if kids let it be. video games are not hypnotic mind control devices. it is the kids who are dumb enough, or have a weak enough will power to believe that the life in gta 4 is like real life who will have a problem with it. i think the arguments that the media are corrupting our children's minds are wrong. the media does not ruin kids' minds, the kids are the ones dumb enough to believe what the see on tv or play in a game. i, and all my friends, regularly play mature-rated games and watchy violent programming, but that does not mean we are gonna steal a police car, or shoot up a hospital. on the contrary, these games are incredibly fun because it allows is to experience things that we would not do otherwise like steal cars or murder aliens.

hi! theeman. ur comment is one of mature thinking. i play the game for the fun and thrill it offers me. the SWITCH (to turn it on or off) lies with any of us. blaming the game doesn't help. as u say, with these games v can do what v can't in real life. and there rests the matter. ;-)

I know you've had this posted for a while, but I just thought I'd let you know I think you did a good job on this.

Also, I wanted to comment on what some other people said about not liking these types of video games because of their bad influence on children. Games such as this are not made for children. That's why they have a mature rating. Parents shouldn't be allowing their children to play these games just as they don't allow them to watch rated R movies. I think games like this are perfectly fine for adults.

Posted: Jun 14, 2008

Author Comment:

hi! madonnafan. i agree with u totally. ratings r meant to be followed. but it goes without doubt, GTA4 has crossed all boundries of resistance. for it had captured our hearts and hands. ;-)

my older cousin played this the other day and i was watching it and i almost wanted to get my little sister out of the room (10 yrs old) with all that swearing, saying the f word. beating people up and shooting. does this game want kids to go out and steal cars and shoot at cops? knowing some kids they will think they can do it in real life too. i understand ppl like this game for the thrill of it, but it's just so mean I'm too bubbly of a person to play this i couldn't beat up or kill a person even in a video game hah. nice review though.

hi! steph. a war is taking place in afghanistan and iraq. i watch the news about it on tv each day. does that make me like wars or become a soldier or rebel - nope! but i want to keep in touch with what is happening there.

a game is just a game. it transports us into another world where v can do what v can't in real life. and the thrill it offers is a bonus. most gamers go for it the same way. most kids r way too smart to rise to the bait of stealing. for then they'll never really really enjoy the game. maybe a freak onr or two'll be negatively influenced. a hardcore gamer'll go for the game. it is for that reason each game has ratings so kids know what to go for.

and if u've played GTA4, u'll never come out of the virtual experience. it is simply marvellous, outstanding. ;-)

A)The bugs with Girlfriends and muscle shit.
B)Dude...Between us...It costed 50$ :(.Anyway it was about there worth...

hi! . thanx. GTA is worth every penny spent on it. i can't remember any other game, i've been involved with as much as this. i'm sure u'll've a whale of a time with this one. lol. ;-)

I've played some of the GTA games and speaking as a young person myself, these games don't have an affect on my behavior. I can play the game, and run over people with a tank for an hour, then leave the game and never once have a thought of harming someone else. You can't blame a video game for someone's actions. It is a fun GAME, it is a game, not an instruction video on how to live your life. What really irks me is that people are trying to take this game away from everyone, even the responsible people. There are ratings on the game for a reason. If parents let their children play this game, or don't teach them the difference between a video game and reality then it is their fault not the video games. I know this wasn't the main focus of your review but I know that there are many people that are against games like these.

I personally liked GTA 3 the most :)
