Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB) is already creating waves worldwide. It has broken sales records. The real attraction is the dozens of popular playable characters and their fighting moves, "Final Smashes." Brawl features everyone - Link and Samus Aran to third-party guests like Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. While the game is on both multiplayer and online multiplayer action, Brawl also comes with an intriguing single player campaign called "The Subspace Emissary" where players can engage in side-scrolling fighting while enjoying character-specific storylines. With new characters, gameplay, stages and campaigns for both single and multiplayer, SSBB is Wii's winning champ.

SSBB uses a battle system unlike that of typical fighting games. In addition to the standard multiplayer mode, it features other multiplayer modes and options in Group mode. A new feature known as "Rotation" allows up to 16 players to compete in sequence by switching out winners or losers after each round.

Story: Mario and Kirby are fighting on a stadium located in the Smash Bros. world. Ancient Minister and his Subspace Army detonate a Subspace Bomb, transporting the stadium into Subspace. As the armies spread, some heroic characters team up to repel the enemy, while villainous characters try to get power by converting allied characters into trophies.

Minister is subordinate to Ganondorf, who is under orders from Master Hand to draw the world into Subspace. Minister's true identity is that of Master R.O.B. Unit. He rebels against his superiors and joins the allied characters. The allied heroes enter Subspace, where it is revealed that R.O.B., Ganondorf, and even Master Hand were all being controlled by an even higher being, Tabuu. Tabuu transforms all protagonists into trophies, but a few are revived by brooches that were attached to them by King Dedede. They revive other characters scattered across Subspace and make their way through a great maze with Tabuu waiting in the center. Following an ambush by Sonic the Hedgehog, the allied characters ultimately defeat Tabuu, saving the Smash Bros. universe.

What makes SSBB lovable is its characters – Link, Fox, Samus, Diddy Kong, Ike, Pit, Wario. Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog. This is where the fun lies apart from a totally gripping online game. Multiple musical tracks add to the game tremendously. Excellent graphics and trophies add to its charm.

For such a fantastic game, I find there are few flaws. Opponents’ skills cannot be gauged. While playing with opponents, there is no communication. GameCube controller is essential aside from Wii controls. Frames sometimes freeze, taking away the online joy. Adventure mode sucks. Friend Code system also sucks. There are not enough KO moves. One can of course ignore these flaws in the excitement of the game. Hardcore players will love the game and won’t detect any flaws.

SSBB is the best video game release of 2008 apart from Grand Theft Auto 4. Overall it’s a great game. If you haven’t played it already, you are missing something.
