In November, 2012 I spent a month travelling across China to learn more about the Chinese Teahouse culture. The experience inspired six short stories, which are currently circulating in a single-box book. This story is one of my reflections.

the water temperature is perfectly set

too hot and you burn the delicate leaves

too cold and the full flavour is not exposed

all senses are engaged

appreciate the colour, tone, clarity and texture

smell the tea

woody, earthy, nutty, fruity

slurp in a small amount

hold the tea in your mouth

purse your lips and suck in air


note the flavours as the tea slides down your throat

an aftertaste

an aftersmell

bitter, sweet, mellow

repeat repeat repeat
