I walked through the door at half past five
Had so much to say which was on my mind
I smiled at Mum, but her face was grim
'I've got some news for you,' she said, as I walked in
'The doctors have come up with the answer,
And it's not good news; Nana's got cancer.'
My face crumpled; tears fell down my face
Mum pulled me into a warm embrace
As I sobbed into her shoulder, wishing something would give
Mum softly added, 'She's been given six months to live.'
And those words were the blade which cut through my heart
I sobbed a little harder and just fell apart
I thought of Nana, in her hospital bed
Wires and tubes crowning her head
I thought of her running up the stairs
I thought she'd got better; this isn't fair
I thought of her smile and her selfless ways
I stood with Mum, in a surreal daze
Nana was the last person to deserve this
This was her life - couldn't the doctors preserve it?
I love you, Nana, I always will
When you are healthy, and when you are ill
Stay with us for as long as you can
Don't leave us behind just yet, Nan
