Twenty Six Futures

  1. Maybe he was going to be a doctor
  2. A prominent writer
  3. Maybe she was going to be the first woman president in the U.S.
  4. The first to travel to another planet
  5. The scientist who would find the ultimate cure to cancer
  6. The person who would make the deciding goal for the finals at the World Cup
  7. The person who would proudly say "He…She... was my student"
  8. But now, how can we know?
  9. When now their future's all gone
  10. When now, they are no longer with us
  11. A "Mom I'm home" would no longer be said
  12. A clarinet, the piano, the drums would no longer be played
  13. And the dolls, and tea sets, and footballs, and race cars are all in a corner without an owner
  14. And all those planned lessons, would no longer be taught
  15. Christmas presents, forever sealed
  16. Goals and dreams, forever broken
  17. Laughs, Smiles, cries of joy,
  18. Oh, why did they have to go?
  19. Why can't we turn back the clock?
  20. And just go back in time
  21. Why can't we bring them back to life?
  22. And never have their epitaph engraved
  23. They've done nothing wrong
  24. But want a life of their own
  25. A life…just to live
  26. What is wrong with wanting a life?
