July 20, bloody Wednesday
The day we dared to dare
Buried our differences
Wore the armor
In brevity and dignity
With warnings plenty
Risks too numerous
And the heavens without rain
Fighting for freedom
In post-colonial struggles
Against ruthless villains
Craving for power
For the sake of gain
Tired of broken promises
And frustrated hopes
Fed up with corruption
And budding dictatorship
For a brighter future
Only that my child would see it
To bask in its sunshine
And pride in its beauty
As it struck this anniversary
Honoring those of brave heart
Who stood the grounds
When cowards trembled
And showed the cleavage of foot
Who plunged the jaws of death
At broken spear and raging beast
And so died a noble course
Unselfishly for you and me
For us is to guard this legacy
And nurture this freedom
That they died not in vain
