We were at a Super Wal-Mart recently and we shopped for our little ones teething cookies (normally we buy Gerbers Penut Butter cookies but they were out) and decided to get a different brand. We saw "Earths Best" organic teething cookies. I thought, 'well they are all natural, and specifically say *teething cookies* on the box, so it has to be good for him'. Well we got them and when I opened them at home it disturbed me how hard they were. I figured that they might just disolve or soften fast like Gerbers does(granted Gerber and Beech Nut brands tend to be soft to begin with). I watched him eat the first four with a little difficulty. They seemed to stay hard long, but break into peices when pressure is applied on top and bottom in different directions. He didn't seem to have any issues though so I just let him keep using them in place of his pb cookies since we are broke like three days after pay day due to past bills we are catching up on.

Tonight we went to my sisters and I gave him half a cookie to help him stay quiet and happy on my lap (he ALWAYS cries for his uncle to hold him when we are there). Then my fiance Vinnie looked over and saw him making a face that seemed a bit odd. He started to turn a little red and wasn't making noise, wasn't eating the cookie and I realized he wasn't breathing. I tried to pull his arms up and get him to open his airway so that we could get it out easier but he wouldn't let me lift his arms. My fiance started to panic, blaming me for what was happening before his uncle told Vinnie to get his finger in the babies mouth while he held it open.. they got the cookie out, to find it was STILL solid. It had not dissolved at all. I was hysterical, both for being blamed and because my baby nearly died. The baby cried for nearly a half hour afterwards and I just couldn't stop shaking so his uncle walked him around calming him for me.

I am not saying not to buy them if you haven't had problems or such and you've already been buying them, just letting everyone know what happened to me. A little warning, I won't buy any odd brands again thats for sure.. my little one is too precious to me. After what happened, I'm just too scared to try new teething stuff and plan to stick to the tried and true. I'll just advertise here saying buy Gerber and Beech Nut, after all they have been around for god knows how long! they must know what they are doing!! lol

P.S. The baby is fine, he was quite a bit shaken up, but he's ok! ^.^

your welcome. though you should personally test ALL teething cookies before you let the baby have them. take a small peice and place it in your mouth to see if it melts easily, if it doesn't then don't let your child have them. the slower they melt the more likely he or she can choke on them.

Wow...my 8 month old son is cutting his fifth tooth and the doctor said that it is ok to give him crackers. I was wondering about the safety of the baby crackers/cookies. My husband and I have decided now not to even bother with them until he has enough teeth to chew.

Crazy how things marketed for babies can really be so dangerous.

I am glad that your little one is doing ok!

to be honest Gerbers penut butter teething cookies and gerbers banana cookies have done wonders with ours. He hasn't needed a whole lot of help otherwise. however if the little one is getting a fever I have found boundless information on the fact that if the baby has a high fever and seems to be having trouble sleeping baby ibuprofen is a miracle worker. the pharmasist we spoke to said to give him some right before bed and on WebMD I have read a note from a doctor saying that if he still wakes up and you changed and fed him before he went to bed to let him cry. Don't get him into the habit of getting up at 3am to eat and be changed! It's so hard to let him cry, but thats for the best! Thanfully the medicine seems to let mine feel good enough to sleep through the night again, but then his problem is he is teething AND has a pretty nasty cold ^.^ nothing to get too worried over, but I'm watching him in case it doesn't get better.. so far since I gave him the medicine though he's gone from being so sick he doesn't want to move to running around and playing and acting his old self again!! YAY!!!

hi! iason. ur baby account is so moving, it is the best piece i've read about babies in recent years. love u. ;-)
