The Australian Cattle Dog pup was born in a house. She was all white, thanks to the Dalmatian ancestry in her breed’s history. She suckled the precious colostrum from her mother. She would be protected from infections for at least a little while. Since her mother wasn’t well taken care of she was the only pup in her litter.
The pup was raised not to trust humans. When she was six months old she was dumped in the countryside. She didn’t stay long. A woman picked her up and took her to an animal rescue. There she lived with a pack of dogs.
Her life wasn’t the best. She was the omega of the pack. At least she got fed everyday. She wondered if her life would ever change. Then she was adopted by a couple.
There she lived for only two weeks. She then was sent back to the rescue. There she lived her life. She always wanted to herd the other dogs and her caretakers. She wanted to make them go where she wanted; being omega didn’t help.
She felt herself wanting more. She felt that she could do more in her life; that there was some greater purpose to her life. She didn’t know how to get rid of these feelings and she wanted to find a home of her own. She didn’t know if these feelings would ever go away. Sometimes she couldn’t bare to be a part of the pack anymore.
At the house where the Australian Cattle Dog lived she smelled things that got her heart and blood going. She would sniff around for awhile. She could never figure out what the scent was that made her feel this way. On her way to the adoption place she smelled these same smells. A part of her wanted to do something.
Then one day at the adoption place a man came in that smelled of the things that made the dog’s heart and blood go. He crouched in front of her crate and looked at her. She raised her nose to get a good sniff of him. He took her home with him. It was a long ride.
When they finally reached her new home she was put into a pen with the animals that had the smell that made her blood rush and her heart pound. They looked at her calmly. One broke away from the herd. She instinctively herded it back to the rest. The man was watching from the sidelines.
The man whistled and the dog pricked her ears. She turned to him. He patted her on the head.
“Good girl, Rhianne,” he praise.
“Rhianne!”
He had given her a name. She squirmed against him happily. Now she had a name and she had fulfilled her destiny.
