New Features - Audio, Expanded Categories, and More

We’re pleased to announce some new changes to Booksie that will make it a better place to share your writing and creative endeavors.

New Content Categories
This piece of content is posted as an Article. We have added new Articles, Books, Book Reviews, Scripts, Essays, and Miscellaneous categories based on your requests. This helps readers to better find the content they are looking for.

Audio

Writers can now upload audio versions of their work as MP3s.  In the near future we'll be providing you with the ability to download the audio into your mp3 payer, ipod, etc.

Speed

We've also been tweaking the site so that the pages load faster.  Hopefully you'll notice the improvement.

Homepage Modifications

We've modified the homepage to accomodate the new categories.

We’ll be launching several other great features over the next couple of weeks as well as some fixes to common Booksie problems including image uploading, content deletion, and overall speed.

Please let us know if you have any questions about these features and keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks Punishment.

YAY!What other features are you putting on?!, And what would people post in books? isn't a book just like a novel?

:)Thanks for putting scripts on!

Author Comment:

We have lots of other features planned. You'll see the next few rolling out over the next couple of weeks.

I'm glad you asked about Novels versus Booksie. Novels by definition are fiction whereas books encompass all genres. If you have fiction, put it in Novels. If you have a book that is anything else, put it in books.

Hmmm, i felt a difference as soon as the 10 minute loading was over hahahah. But im guessing thats because a lot is happening at once.
I like the new categories you added!!! ESPECIALLY THE MISCELLANEOUS!!!
Thanks a lot!!!! Hope the new upgrades wont shut us out to often :S
I was depressed during its upgrade.... i had to visit other sites as a result [shudders]
YOU ADDED THE LINK FOR THE RANDOM FIRST LINES LIKE I ASKED!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!!!!!
But alas, one small problem... on my page the bio is outside the box, did that make sense? The box that holds the writing has been breached!! But ive noticed it has happened everywhere on every page. Its the area in the top right corner that is affected. HEAL!!!!

Posted: Mar 17, 2008

Author Comment:

Sorry about the loading time and the downtime. It was unexpected and resulted both from the upgrades and the fact that Booksie was mentioned The Boston Globe, a major US newspaper. If you're interested, you can read the article here:

http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2008/03/17/author_author/

There may be a few more outages over the next couple of days as we work to improve the speed. Booksie has grown tremendously so we're working to keep the site fast and snappy. Sorry for any inconvenience.

We're listening to your suggestions. The Random Fist Lines is the first of several things you have recommended that we will implement over the next couple of weeks/months.

Thanks again for all of your feedback. Keep it coming please.

I really like the new upgrades! Especially the link to the 'Random First Lines'!!
I love how the pages don't take forever to load either!
But I was totally lost while the page was being worked on! It was so worth it though! :]

Posted: Mar 17, 2008

I MISSED YOU WHILE YOU WERE AWAY BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.

Posted: Mar 18, 2008

How does everyone feel about the front page? We're still tweaking it a bit. As people upload more categories it will fill out the left side. We're also working on making the Featured Writing a bit more dynamic. We want to Feature as many writers as possible.

Posted: Mar 18, 2008

What're the criteria for 'featured writing'?
Not complaining as I've been on it two or three times...

The faster speeds are much appreciated. Not helping my booksie addiction though.

Posted: Mar 18, 2008

Articles, good stuff - I have been reluctant to put up as "short story" - Amen to speed, but although I tick "remember me" sometimes I am still requested to log in anew.

Posted: Mar 18, 2008

I don't really care for how you show the recently submitted works, I like the way it was before when it showed a picture with it, but now you can't even see a picture, and that's one thing that usually catches my attention when logging in.

Otherwise, everything is going great on my end of Booksie so far, no compliants, it is sad though when I can't get on, but I know you're working on things for us.

Keep it up you guys ;)

Thanks for the feedback. We're looking into multiple ways of showing new work, including going back to how it was before.

HELP!! I have tried to publish a poem but the link doesn't take you in to the poem!!!!!!!!!!! In my minds cage is a veritable monster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HELPPPPPP!! Instead of a lovely poem you just go in to the poetry link.

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

Author Comment:

Yup, we're aware of it. The link on the Publish confirmation page is broken and it will be fixed. The link to the poem should work from other parts of the site though.

Can those poems be deleted that mean nothing?? I am doing EVERYTHING right.
Try again tomorrow????????????

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

Author Comment:

You can delete poems. Make sure you delete the inner section first, the "chapter." Then you can delete the whole thing. We're adding a message to make this clearer.

My ex-girlfriend had the perfect breasts.

ah okay.

Hey Booksie Guy. I posted this on your page as well but... it's bugging me... sorry. When I want to go to the second page of newest writes.... it wont let me! It goes to some other weird page! Can that be fixed?

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

Author Comment:

Yes, it will be fixed pronto. It's part of a link problem we're having. We made some changes to the links to speed up the site and unfortunately it caused some unintended consequences. We thoroughly tested it but sometimes you just don't know until it goes live.

Hopefully the site is faster though.

I am finding it all quite frustrating from my page. If I click on my writing I can't read my poems - obviously others can because they are commenting but I can't even bring up the comments. Just sails me through to the poetry link or to a page with nothing on it.
I hope this can be fixed or unfortunately I may just give it all away.

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

Author Comment:

Sorry about that. We know about the link problem and will have them fixed in the next day.

Also having the same problem. I cannot get into any of my poems or stories I just get the genre page.

Hope this link is repaired soon

Peace

Boneman

It will be. Sorry for the inconvenience.

i love all the new changes and whatnot. but i wish the photos that u can select to go with the story would show up with the new writing on the home page. i noticed that even if u select a picture, it wont appear on the front page when your story is listed under new writing. i personally liked the pictures and wished they stayed after the upgrade. everything else is really great though. ^^

Thanks for the feedback Alice.

BREATHLESS

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

I agree with not seeing the photos on the home page for new writing, and must admit it generally lured me to the writing. (I am more enthused to see new writing than featured writing)(love the featured writing don't get me wrong).

I also wanted to publicly laugh out loud at Eric's comments just above me.

Posted: Mar 19, 2008

Author Comment:

Thanks for the feedback.

im having some problems :( number ons is when ever i click some of my writing on my page when its in edit version it takes me to a search of my name! and also i published a poem and when it says congrats for publishing to see it click here, it took me to www.booksie.com//////// im not sure what that is but nothing came up. so yeah, is that just my computer or what? oh and whats with eric's comment, why did u reply i wouldn't have lol.but other than that everything is good!

Posted: Mar 20, 2008

Author Comment:

Yup, totally aware of these problems and working to have them fixed. They should be by the end of the day. Sorry again for the inconvenience.

I was completely ignored re: my 'featured writing' query.

I am weeping.

Posted: Mar 20, 2008

Author Comment:

No, don't weep. I was ignoring your question though. We don't reveal exactly how it's chosen but I will tell you it's highly based on Reads. The more Reads your work gets the better chance it has to make the front page. That's why we provide you with tools to help increase your readership. The other reason I didn't want to say anything is that we are looking into changing it a bit so anything I told you might not be accurate in the future. There is some info about Featured Writing on the site:

http://www.booksie.com/about/promote_your_writing.html

aaahhh awsome new updates! yay :)

Posted: Mar 22, 2008

yeah i was wondering why all the pgs were coming at top speed! ive got a request could u consider putting a spell check in the publish center?

Posted: Mar 22, 2008

I did notice that it wasn't taking 10 minutes to log me in anymore lol. Still, could you consider letting us make our page more our own??

MP3 still not functioning!

Posted: Mar 28, 2008

I love the changes but I see some things have not changed at all... I just posted a new poem for the fist time in months because life has gotten in the way... The Piece I submitted "Taiwo's Blessing" is not how I posted it at all!!!... the spaces between my stanzas are not there as typed... they are all pressed together and I cannot edit it to be as I intended... any suggestions?... this is not the first time either!!! I hope you have a fix this time... very frustrating!!!

I have experienced this also ddrandall. Poems that have already been on Booksie have been rehashed and all formatting out the window. Still we have to expect little glitches I guess.

Posted: Mar 29, 2008

I HAS PROBLEMS.

...XD
Okay, this is how it goes. (I'm new, btw.)
I have added my story, and then I decided, oh! new chapter!
So, i go to add the second chapter, and every time I post it, it doesn't show up, and when you go to click the table of contents, it's there, but it takes you to page 1.
I'm about to give up and just post each chapter seperate.

Author Comment:

Yes, we've identified the bug and are working to fix it. It should be all set soon. Thanks for letting us know.

- BG

I am having the same problem as the comment above me. I've changed a short story to a novel and chapter 2 doesn't appear. (it takes you to page 1)

Posted: Apr 11, 2008

Author Comment:

I think it has to do with the fact you changed the type. It shouldn't be a problem but must have caused an error. We're getting ready to release a new version of the site soon that should solve the problem.

Hey,

I'm having trouble embedding some images, I already have the programming needed to embed the images on Booksie, but nothing is happening. A little help?

~DarkFairy~

Author Comment:

Hi DarkFairy,

Can you email us with your specific problems. What happens when you try to embed?

BG

To the booksie people - can we have some changes to your featured writing? Some of those featured have been there for so long, great writing all but I think there should be a change of the guard with quite a few of them.

Posted: Apr 18, 2008

Author Comment:

Yup, we're working on that. The system that changes them bogged down due to the volume of writing submitted. We hope to have it back and running pronto.

BG

YES>>> I'm with Anna!! Why aren't the changes in featured writing takling place properly? And no one seems to be answering our queries... I have had pieces receive several comments and not even make it to the top 20 as they used to do. They just die and go to Booksie heaven somewhere!!

Posted: Apr 20, 2008

Author Comment:

The Featured Writing is indeed stuck at the moment. The volume of work that the site has received broke the site's calculation system so we are working on fixing it. We're hopeful it will be done in the next couple of days. Thanks for your patience.

BG

Hello ^smiles^
well, I ahve that problem again (double vision) LOl!
yes the last poem I published has doubled it self LOL!
I still ahve some from before that are doubled, if you need to know the exact ones I'll look them up. I would delete but I tried that and both get lost.
ok, that's all...have a nice day :-)

Hi Air,

Can you let me know which ones you are having trouble with. Please email to contact (at) booksie.com.

Thanks!

I have a question:

Is there any reason why just about everything I submit here from a Dell computer is properly formatted, whereas if I try to submit something from my MacBook it's all run together & incoherent?

Furthermore, a little bit ago I had tried to publish a poem & it did not publish. How come?

Thankees in advance.

hey, i've noticed that in my first novel (and second :P) some chapters are in different fonts, and sometimes even different sizes, when i am copying and pasting them into the input page in the same font family and size. is this a bug?

Posted: May 4, 2008

Author Comment:

not really bug but a quirk of transferring something from Word to html. Word tends to insert all kinds of strange characters. The way to get the cleanest paste is to post your chapter into notepad, then paste it back to Booksie and add the formatting. This takes a bit of work though. You can also try saving your document as html and then pasting. That sometimes works.

We are working on ways of making the paste work smoother.

ok so i know you get a dozen comments and this is just one to add to it. and i'm sorry for that. but i need help. i dont know if something is actually wrong with booksie or if its my computer.
well first of all
recently (around May 6 just in case you dont read this till later) booksie was down for maintenence. i come back when its up and running and the profile pic that i had was automatically changed back to my old one.
i tried to put the new one back, but booksie keeps thinking its the old one - even if i move to a different computer where the old one isn't stored. it still thinks the new is the old.
so then i just took the picture down.
i know its a semi minor complaint so i understand if you dont answer right away b/c i'm sure you have bigger fish to fry. but i would like to know if 1) is this happening b/c booksie is doing it? and 2) can it be fixed? and 3) if so, how?
thanks a million booksie guy!

Hi Alice,
I've heard a few other rumblings about profile pics. We're going to check it out. Thanks for letting us know.

In the meantime, try changing it and then waiting for an hour or so. Your new pic may be caught in the cache and so while it updates it might not look like it is. Just one idea.

More to come.

BG
