People are able to buy video games that behead police officers, shoot them with a pistol, slaughter them with a chainsaw, and set them in flames.  You are probably thinking no one would ever think of buying a game like that, but unfortunately people have purchased such games.  There is a large question that is often asked; can video games train people to murder? The answer is, of course, yes. Video games have a large impact on our minds and the ability to learn, creating an obsession in youth, and aggressive thoughts and actions towards others in everyday life.

Video games flash across the world on millions of televisions and computer screens day after day. The most frequent word that processes through a youths mind each day is a word we all seem to know, video games. The next new “fad” or “cool thing” is often the newest and most popular video game that everyone else supposedly has. But would you rethink and alter playing video games if you knew that your clever mind was slowly deteriorating each hour?  Is it true that video games can be a distraction to not only essential things such as school, but to stop the human mind from increasing and expanding knowledge? David Walsh, a child psychologist was asked “Does repeated exposure to violent video games have more of an impact on a teenager than it does on an adult?” David Walsh replied; "It does. And that's largely because the teenage brain is different from the adult brain. The impulse control center of the brain, the part of the brain that enables us to think ahead, consider consequences, manage urges -- that's the part of the brain right behind our forehead called the prefrontal cortex," says Walsh. "That's under construction during the teenage years. In fact, the wiring of that is not completed until the early 20s." If it is true that video games cause children to be violent, and children are at risk, why do they continue to play and interact in their video games? An average teenager would say, because they’re fun and obviously exhilarating; adults even play them to get their adrenaline rushing.  But because video games can be addicting and thrilling to the human mind, it causes them to not be able to see that video games gradually drag you in and ensnare you into thinking that it is everything you need.   Sometimes it even mesmerizes you, and consequently you don’t hear or think of anything that is in the region around you. Video games are hurting our youths mind and the power for them to gain knowledge.

I’ve seen and experienced what video games can do to you. I’ve seen the affect that it can cause on the individuals playing the video games, and the people around them watching. It not only affects you if you are the one playing them, but it has a large affect on the people viewing what you are playing. Dr. Anderson said; "Violent video games provide a forum for learning and practicing aggressive solutions to conflict situations,” but is it not true that video games seem to take over learning?  Have you ever found yourself not able to turn away from something? Not able to even glance away for a split second afraid that you’ll miss something important? That is exactly what video games can do to you. Video games prevent you from turning away; even if you’re thinking “this is not what I should be doing” or “this is not what I want to waste my time doing.” Now for the person playing the video game, not only are you hurting your mind but you are also getting addicted to it yourself. This obsession seems to take place, overpowering everything else around you.

Video game fascination can lead to bad behavior afterwards. I have two brothers and a little sister that is just a fingertip away from playing a hefty variety of video games. We own pretty much every game system ever made, and of course you have to have games to play on those fine game systems. Right after school they run to the nearest game system and begin their next adventure into another world. They amuse themselves with just a click of a mouse and a stroke of a key. Their faces are completely glazed over and you just know that they are in their own small world. There obsession in unbelievably surreal, making their whole life revolve around their playing time. What my siblings don’t seem to realize is that their attitudes absolutely change when they are finished playing. My mother has to force them to end their game, and sometimes there is yelling, screaming, grounding, and tantrums all about the house. Such attitude must result from the playing of video games since it occurs more often than not in our household. Dr. Anderson said the following; "In the short run, playing a violent video game appears to affect aggression by priming aggressive thoughts. Longer-term effects are likely to be longer lasting as well, as the player learns and practices new aggression-related scripts that can become more and more accessible for use when real-life conflict situations arise." Video games can lead to aggressiveness, which in turn can lead to violent thoughts, murdering, or fighting.

The task is up to us to modify the violence that is happening around us. We can change and alternate what is occurring in our youth’s constant life. We all have the power and capacity to change what revolves around us.  You don’t have to quit playing video games all together, but you don’t have to allow someone to continue playing video games excessively. Do we want our minds to not think properly? Do we want to have an increase of murders to continue throughout the world? Video games are ruining our minds, creating an obsession, and causing us to act in such a shocking way of aggression.  It all boils down to one question; will we do something when it could be a matter of life or death?

This was very well written and well sourced article, good work. Now like all articles now I'm going to share my input. Uh, mostly in the form of a disagreement, since I love to argue and I enjoy differences in opinion.

Recent studies really show that people who frequently play violent video games are less likely to act out acts of violence in real life that others of the same age group.

Study suggests that just like reading a book, watching television, or writing an article (like you are), video games serve as an escape from reality into fantasy, where we can let out our emotions and imagination. Thus, having vented there, video gamers have much less of an urge to act out these things in real life.

The reason why violence is appreciated in video games is exactly because it does not happen everyday, and it's thrilling.

Do you want to play a video game where you go around all day working and then coming home to pay the bills? Sure, but as long as someone you aren't in real life.

The violence is just marketing. Companies want to sell, what sells best? Violence. It's cool, it's thrilling, it makes good eye candy. Like I said.

But, video games don't affect you, it's the same as watching Die Hard or Rambo, or reading some Stephen King. You get mesmerized all the same, you get sucked into the story. But people today are not more likely to act out violence just because we have violent video games.

Back when Frankenstein was just published, it scared the bejeesus out of everyone, with so much pain and death. No one acted out on it then, and no one complained.

If you think back when they just had the television. Violence was a NEW THING. People were thrilled to see it. It was a blast. No one complained then.

Today, we're all de-sensitized to the things on television or books. We find the same amount of thrill in games like Manhunt or GTA, but people are complaining now.

You wonder though, there are always reasons.

You hear in the news that some 8 year old wanted to act out a scene in GTA so he hijacks a car and manages to kill himself. The parents are really onto it now.

The fault is really in the media.

Here in the world, 6 billion people, one stupid idiot dies because of a video game.

And these kinds of things really happen throughout history.

Even kings and queens in the past have done stupid things like believing that they can fly and end up splattering.

Media makes news travel much quicker than they used to. And it makes it sound often. Makes it sound bloody. Makes it sound violent.

It's the bloody marketing. Those news companies want to make money, and what sells fast? Violence. I said this before.

So even if you were to stop this violence...where do you start? And if you do stop the violent video games, would that not cause more young children to be curious, thinking "what could be so bad?" and try out stupid things? Laws again and again prove this.

Thanks for your comment, it opened my mind. But I am still sticking with my opinion that video game violence can lead to aggression; like you, I argue my opinion and hold a strong one. But thanks for your input! =)

I really appreciate this article. It's totally true and something not many teens would be willing to speak out against. Cool stuff Maple--keep it up.

Trust me, if there were no games with some brutality, I would freak out, and when I am done with a game, it stays in my mind, or stays nowhere. I never took anything out and harmed anyone because of the game. I harm people when they deserve it.

The only dangerous thing about games is the addiction which, thank god, I am immune to. And games are time consuming.

Personally, I think games should be called are rather that being an object of amusement.

HAHA, thanks for the comment! I like hearing others opinions on things! =)

haha nicely written. But i have to agree with the first person who commented. I think video games is an outlet for people, just like poetry is for others, or playing guitar, or eating food, or cutting for others.

If you deny people these games, the violence would still be there, desire to inflict violence comes from society itself and your own up upbringing and psychological state. Violent games is just an outlet. Good article though, very well written and an opinion is an opinion, nobody is right. But we all have points of view and that's what makes the world interesting.

Yes, thank you! I really think video games CAN cause people to result to violence, but notice how "can" was all capatlized. =)

This is a very well-written article, though i disagree with you. If that was not the case i would really love it.
Controverse has made a good comment and I have to add:
There are games (not american ones as far as i'm concerned) that are able to make you say that VIDEOGAMES are Art!
Japanese videogames have amazing plot! Even if they are violent, there are times the fantasy and the picturesque scenes cover it up gently.
IF you don't know what I mean...Google 'Kingdom Hearts' or 'Final Fantasy'. Watch some of the amazing screenshots that combine manga-style heroes and plot.
VIOLENCE IS IN THE MEDIA
SOMETIMES THE VIDEOGAME CREATORS HAVE TO USE VIOLENCE JUST TO BE ACCEPTED

manhunt
(not registered user)

Manhunt is a violent game.for over 18s people do not know how to kill when they just tap the x button loads of times. It is the paren's fault for letting them do that.Think about it a gun you need ammo the gun itself and knowing how to use it.In many countries guns are banned.all countries should ban guns.

Hmm... interesting opinion. Yes, banning guns might be a better conclusion. Thanks for the comment! =)

This is an excellent piece of writng which really seems to hit the nail on the head, i too agree with the author that nasty violent video games can affect those of a sensitive disposition and especially where the mind has not evolved to a mature state.

In the Uk like many other countries we are seeing unpresendented levels of violence being used by children to children even under the age of 16.

I also blame poor parenting skills and the lack of discipline in the home, these days kids will join gangs and their mums will either be oblivious to their whereabouts or couldn't care less until their child are abducted like in the case of MADELINE MCcann and then it's always somebody else's fault.

VIDEO GAMES are like guns, knives or anything you wish to use to cause death it's really down to the hand that uses them simply depending on your level of morality amd maturity and your own personal choice but we live in aggressive times where we are too easily distracted by violence and can be lead in to confrontation because the self control button is permanently switched off.
Yes we are desensitised to war because there is so much of it going about death is now the norm whilst before it would hit us hard.

Wow, that's interesting. Thanks for the comment! =)

I disagree tremedouncly on this article. I do not feel it is worth it to pull facts supporting my idea right now because I know that no matter what anyone says you will stay on your opion and that Controverse has already done that. I just wanted to say that some video games are bad I do agree on that but most are not. For some people it is a way of release. They do things in the game because they know that they could never do it in real life. Also after something stressfull happens I play videogames, because I can do whatever I want with no consequences, unlike the real world. If it wern't for video games I would be in fights every other day,and with them I am a very calm person. It is like a persciption, and now you're thinking that I'm addicted to video games, I'm not. I do community work in the summer, my own choice of course. I could play G.T.A. and then do stuff with friends with a totally different personality. I advise you not to pester people who do bad things in video games, who knows what they're capable of doing in real life!

I'm sorry if this article offended you, but it was just an opinion that I felt strong about. Thanks for the critizem though. Maybe I just don't understand that people use video games to vent. I guess people just use different ways to feel better and release their emotions. Thanks again for the comment, I appreciate it! =)

Actually, I'm very grateful that we have video games. To me, video games are like the movies...except you play the role of a main character. There's always a mix of good and bad things out there, it's just the nature of things.

I disagree at the part with deteriorating minds. Video games improve physical and mental reflexes. Scientific researches say that people who play video games have superior physical reflexes than the one who don't play. For me, video game is like any other type of entertainment out there, like watching movies, reading books and it can even be the same as doing your homework.

There are so many games out there that has good in it than it is bad. There's the Brain Age series and another mind enhancer are the Word Coach Series which helps you learn proper english and other languages also.

So, all in all video games aren't all that bad for you. Just pick one carefully, like we pick all other things carefully. It's a new type of hype in this world that we just have to accept. Like everything else in our reality, there's good and there's bad.
