I rose into the clouds following the birds in their flight. I dived back down as I caught glimpse of a larger bird moving through the air. I tried my best to catch up but it spun in and out of the clouds trying to escape me. I caught a last look of the bird as it flew quickly past me. It’s bright wings blinding me, and it’s soft laughter gentle laugh possessing me. It was an angel…
Barks in the night woke me from my dream. But it wasn’t night, it was day, I soon realised as I opened my eyes. Bright light shining through the trees, causing me to wince as I looked around. A lone dog stood watching me. I got up quickly and stood frozen waiting for the dog to react. It stood still, unmoving. Curiosity took control, and I made my way forwards towards the dog.
he lone dog barked again. I felt a sudden calmness come over me as I noticed the creature was leashed. Two policemen walked out from the bushes behind it.
“Where’s he going? Dragging us through there…” The first policeman’s speech grew silent as his eyes met mine. He was like the policemen, that the books my dad read to me talked about. He was round. That stereotypical round. His face was round. His body was round. Even his hands fell into a round circle as he gripped the dogs leash. “Oh my god…It’s him.” The round policeman said in astonishment. His tone confused me, it was one of surprise and relief. Was he looking for me?
“It is as well…” The slimmer and taller policeman confirmed his colleagues decision, and the round policeman began talking quickly into his walkie-talkie. “Hey Jamie. That’s your name isn’t it?” He asked with a sudden soft gentle voice. He wore a wide smile across his face, and took a few steps towards me. I stepped back. “It’s ok Jamie. I’m here to help you.” His grin widened and he took another step forwards. I retreated back to where my bag lay. Bending down I gripped it with one hand and turned to run. My foot met an uplifted root, and I fell forwards into the mud. I heard the policeman’s pace quicken as he ran to where I fell. Quickly I clambered to my feet and broke off into a run.
The policemen behind were quicker than me, but I could fit through the smaller gaps between trees and bushes. The fat policeman seemed to give up half way, and held the dog off from tearing after me. The other policeman stayed in chase. I don’t know how, but I managed to beat him to the clearing. Jumping over the sitting log I tore through the trees on the other side. I came to a stop. So did the tall policeman.
“Jesus…” His voice low and full of terror. I turned my head to the side to glimpse his pale white face. He looked ill. “Jamie…please just come with me.” His voice quivered as he spoke.
“Why?” I said hypnotised by the sight in front of me. “ I want to fly.” I stepped forward.
“Jamie! NO!” The tall policeman watched me as I dropped off the edge of the cliff.
I could hardly hear his shouts, nor did I take notice of the pain in my leg as it caught the side of the cliff. Hypnotised by the fall, I closed my eyes and stuck my arms out. Waiting for flight. I’d done everything I could, God would grant me this wouldn’t he? The priest told me it had been done before, and so maybe he would grant it to me again. I could sense the ground coming into the skies to meet me, before I hit it.
Everything stopped. I was suspended in the air! Joy flooded through my veins. Opening my eyes, I saw an angel in front of me. She held out her hand. Taking it, I noted how warm it was. The warmth quickly spread through my body and awoke every sense inside me. Light formed far in front of me. I flew through the darkness with the angel towards the light. The journey became more difficult the closer I got. My body felt heavier and weak. I feel from the angels grasp into the darkness. I couldn’t do anything, but watch the light disappear in the distance and watch as the darkness consumed me.
“I’m sorry Mr Corrin. He feel into a coma. We did everything we good…” The doctor was cut short by the darkened man who stood in front of him.
“It’s ok. I know…a fall like that would….would…” he man broke down into tears. The doctor put an arm around him. Gently giving his condolences, before leaving the man to his drink and his despair.
