little apple seed’s Great Big Adventure
Once there was a little apple seed. He lived happily inside a crisp, green apple. For as far back as he could remember he had hung on that tree in the orchard with all the other apples.
One day everything he knew about life in the orchard changed when a little eight-year-old girl grabbed a hold of his apple home and pulled it off the tree. She placed him inside a basket and took him to where she lived.
When they arrived, he, safely inside his apple home, along with the other apples in the basket were placed gently inside the drawer in a great big box. The big box was much colder than the orchard from where he had come.
A few days later, the door of that big box was opened, as it had been many times since his arrival, but this time his apple home he was picked up and brought out of the cold darkness into the bright warm light of the house by the little girl’s mom. He was placed on a cutting board on the counter, and then…
ALL OF THE SUDDEN there was a loud chopping sound! The little apple seed was really quite scared as a very shiny, sharp knife slid right past him! But, now was his chance to escape!
He jumped out of the apple, off the cutting board and onto the floor! He was a little shook up, but he knew he had to keep moving. Not too far away was a light. A bright light from a door just a little ways away reminded him of the bright warm sunshine of the orchard.
When he had almost made it to that light, the little girl that had picked him went by and opened the door to let her dog outside and, QUICKLY, he scurried through the open door. Just as he did, he heard the little girl’s mom telling her to come eat her apple, and he said a silent prayer of thanks that he was able to escape. Little did he know that little girls don’t eat apple seeds!
Out in the warm sunlight, he almost felt like he was home again. Then as he began to soak in the warmth of the sunshine, he looked ahead and couldn’t believe his eyes! There in front of him was a tree, just like the one he was picked from. He wanted so much to be back safe and sound in that apple in the orchard. He scrambled over to the tree to take a closer look. On his way, he passed through a freshly planted garden full of loose black soil. It felt so nice and soft, and he really was quite tired from his journey, so he decided to lay down for a short nap. He settled into the nice blanket of soil and fell sound asleep.
When he awoke, he had no idea how long he had been there, but he quickly realized he wasn’t going anywhere, anytime soon because he had grown roots and was now firmly planted in that garden by the tree. Growing must be hard work though because he couldn’t stay awake for another minute. He fell into a deep, deep sleep and hibernated there in that soil for a very nice, long nap.
This time, when he finally awoke, he thought he must be dreaming! He was standing nearly as tall as that tree he had been admiring, and he was no longer a tiny seed, but had become a tree himself!
As he studied his new self in amazement, he was thrilled to see bright green apples all over each of his mighty branches. He felt such wonder and excitement as he thought about how each one of his tangy green apples held seeds just like the seed he used to be, and like he once was, they were now being made ready for the same great big adventure that he himself had just enjoyed.
