Solving Our Problem
Maybe solving the poor economy and preventing the end of the world isn't as easy as I am about to describe, but whether or not you agree with my basic thinking is up to you. I suggest we apply dorm cleaning skills to the economic downturn and various effects.
We were cleaning up our rooms at college and I chuckled when a girl, who was supposed to be cleaning, was sitting in the computer lab. This is not the part that made me laugh. The part that made me laugh was what she said.
Complaining to me in a whiny and irritated voice, "Gosh, this is ridiculous. I have to come back to my room every five minutes and be the god damn parents of my roommates. I hate them, they don't do anything and this room is never going to get cleaned."
I kindly took to her spoken thoughts saying, "Ah huh, sure, yah that does really suck."
Even though I said this, I was thinking, "Maybe if you were actually helping your
roommates clean instead of sitting in the computer lab doing nothing and complaining, your room might get finished a little quicker. Our room was finished fast, why are you having so much trouble?"
I pondered this thought for some time and decided our dorm was the first room finished
simply because of the communication and effort given to the project. We didn't complain that this task needed to be done. We worked together giving ideas on how the task of cleaning our abode should be done. We thought what would be more efficient? Should we clean the toilet before the floor? How should we choose who mops, sweeps, or dusts? How much effort should be put into cleaning the bathroom as to cleaning our windows?
After making these imperative decisions, acting upon them, and problem solving along the way, we came to the finished goal of a squeaky clean room. Even though we were finished we still had the one girl down the hall fighting with her roommates with absolutely nothing being accomplished.
Now let's apply our rooms cleaning process to the current financial crisis. Instead of complaining about the task before us, fighting over what should be done, not being able to problem solve, and blaming everybody but yourself, I suggest trying to make necessary decisions, deciding what doesn't work, supplying new ideas, and finishing the task.
To many times have people have tried to convince me that it was the banks and Fanny Mack and Freddy May alone who led us here. To a greater astonishment I've been told that it was the presidents of the United States alone who led us here. Luckily I stopped before these ideas and questioned if the finger pointing should be done to the people we see in the mirrors everyday. I just can not bring myself to believe we are completely dependent on those decisions when in the declaration of independence it states:
"…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. - That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, - That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…"
Unless one is to whiny and says there is nothing we can do, I believe there are some things people can do to help not only personal situations but the economic crisis as a whole. It is the charisma of someone who gets laid off that instead of complains starts a successful business as I have seen in episodes of Recipe for Success that will change the world around us. I think it is the person who buys when they can and doesn't save for the unknown future that will replace money into the pockets of others. I believe it is those who give any solution to a problem as to stopping at complaint that will bring a plethora of profitable ideas to there communities and therefore the rest of those around them.
Stopping at complaint and pointing fingers is done to often when I have seen the efficiency of other methods. Providing ideas whether for a business, a solution, a method for cleaning a dorm room, will bring much more than the one who sits in the computer lab complaining, arguing, and all in all getting nothing accomplished.
