Are You Happy?

Happy: enjoying or characterized by well-being and contentment
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary

Am I happy? Is anyone ever truly happy? It something we all strive for, but do we actually get it? What is happiness?
I’ve learned that happiness is just a moment. It’s the moments in time where something completely captures your heart.
One evening, it was a pretty rough evening at home. I was feeling angry at the world. The electricity had just kicked off for whatever reason. The kids were getting on my nerves. The dog was driving me nuts. I was at my wit’s end. Claire asked if I wanted to see the sun set. We can usually watch it from our back window. I started to yell at her. But I stopped. We sat on the floor, next to the back window and watched the colors of the sky fade. The sun crept below the earth. Serenity found me for a moment. Happiness found me for a moment. All was right with the world for this one moment.
There are times when I get the clippers and nail polish out. I give manicures and pedicures to the girls and to myself. Every once in a while, we’ll even put on make up. Even better, I’ll take pictures of us being silly. I feel happy when I do this with my girls.
I was happy when my sister got married. The ceremony was so beautiful, and I watched as my baby sister become a woman. Someone else’s woman. She was no longer a baby. Tears welled in my eyes the whole ceremony. I listened to their I do’s and my heart just felt full of love. I was happy to see my sister finally find him. I was happy to see my sister happy.
“Happiness is a butterfly which when pursued is just beyond your grasp… but if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you” –Nathaniel Hawthorne

Ohhhh, MAmberConrad this was so nice to read!!!
I teared up reading the part about your baby sister :)
and I know only too well the feel of the setting sun so AWESOME! those moments are truly are there are.
nothing else matters as much. Happiness, well, truer happiness comes in glimpses like through surrendering to the beauty of nature or to be complete in yourself no matter what your life situation you know? when we drop our burdens and with simple acceptance just love...Hey this was so nice to read...Thanks hun...katie :)

Glad to hear you comment. You had such a beautiful poem, but it was so sad. And Jerry came up with his beautiful Haiku piece, and it was sad too. So, I decided to write about something happy.

This is beautiful MA. I have learned that life is not perfect, but doesn't need to be for happiness to alight every so often. No-one is ever going to go through life with a fixed smile on their face! What's the fun in that! We have to know other feelings to recognise happiness. Well written, glad I found it whilst doing some browsing today.

Glad you found it, too, Anna! I was just writing about the things in life that really matter to me the most. Thanks so much for leaving a comment.

Dear MA, this indeed is beautiful and I was so mesmerised by the flow...please please write something on Self realisation in the Opinion article series for all of us....

Self realization?? Hmmm, I'll see what I can do. So glad you enjoyed this piece.

MA, this was so beautiful and touching. When the world lets us down its the little things that helps us smile. For sadness has no strength and will only tarry for a little while.

I totally agree. And I wouldn't know happiness if I hadn't known sadness. Thanks for the wonderful comment.
