Why are human beings violent? To answer this question, let’s define violence. There are two key ordinary definitions of violence. First, it is ‘…behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something’. Second, it is ‘…strength of emotion or of a destructive natural force’.
Out of the above definitions, the last part of the second one struck my attention. ‘…of a destructive natural force’. Does this imply violence is natural? How can we reconcile this with statements usually made by demonstrators against political dictators? Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for principles of non-violence. Mohandas Gandhi also pursued non-violent resistance. Would love to read views from members on the issues of violence!
