Omens PEN 11-9-2012
I never put much stock in omens
The night before my grandmother died I saw a black bird
Hovering Peeking in the window
Innocent youth ? Disney inspired lunacy?
I spoke to it I saw it wink
Coincidence of course
The night before my father died I saw a tree fall
It landed silently amid leaf carpeting
I saw the nest it relinquished to gravity
Days later I found crushed eggs and mutilated embryos
Of course it meant nothing
Driving to the in laws during winter geese crossing the highway
An unobservant speeder ended their trek
Hours later mother in law was gone
In the last week I have witnessed the same deer family of five
Marching onto my property
Always the same procession
They stop midway to look my direction
I see the male pack leader stare
Our gazes are locked
As he passes a shudder grips my spine
