i closed my eyes to the hush of the fan.
the air stirring my hair against my cheek.
i was swimming through a forest of
underwater ferns, the fronds tickling
my face. it was a valley of pastels that
swayed in slow motion to the same
beat as my pulse. light filtered down
upon me from a rippling sky, and
shadows darted quick and slow,
right and left above me.
i cut through the space between
the valley and the sky, not swimming,
not flying. my body slipped through the cool
like bird's wing through air.
i was alone in the valley,
and there was no sound except thick silence,
plugging my ears like a mysterious
song you can't remember. it replayed inside my head.
the sound of instruments never heard before.
