Chapter 1
Jaxon rubbed his hands together vigorously. They were freezing. In the fifteen degree weather, all he had on were some sweats, a baggy sweatshirt, and some sneakers with the toe coming undone. He kept his eyes focused on the unkempt, mossy sidewalk beneath him as he took the route that he knew like the back of his hand home. His mother may be home, or she may not be. He hoped not, for she would most likely be drunk and angry. His father could also be home, which would be even worse. Jaxon feared his father’s abusive ways. He continued his brisk walk for another twenty minutes before he arrived at the rotted stairs that led up to the door of his house. In the driveway there was only one car. His father’s. Jaxon thought about turning around and walking back into downtown to find one of his buddies to crash with, but thought twice because he would freeze before making it. The steps creaked as he slowly walked up them, afraid they might cave in. As he reached the top, he slowly pulled the door open in an attempt to avoid the creaks and moans that would make his father aware of his presence. Suddenly, a sharp pain was felt by Jaxon as his father began pounding on him. He curled up in the fetal position while his very own father began wailing on him, with the intent on killing Jaxon.
A wet cloth lay on Jaxon’s forehead. He realized his right eye was bleeding and tried to sit up, but quickly came back down because the pain in his whole body was excruciating. Voices drifted up the steps. One was angry, the other calm and trying to soothe the situation. The door slammed and Jaxon heard the grey pickup that was his father’s start up and pull out. Jaxon let out a sigh of relief as he realized his brother must’ve saved him once again. Footsteps began up the stairs and into the room Jaxon lay in. His brother walked sullenly through the doorway, just barely fitting. “I have some news, Jaxon. I’m not sure how you’re going to feel, but…” his brother sighed wearily. Jaxon wrinkled his eyebrows in a perplexed fashion. “What?’” he asked loudly…
