Chapter One

I was at my grandmothers house for the weekend. My mum came with me but dad had to stay in Edinburgh. I hated it when work got in the way of things.
Mum was dong some washing while me and grandma played the piano. It was one thing I loved to do and I always like to show off when I get the chance.
"Alex, don't show off." Mum told me as she folded my favourite pink dress. "Your gran knows how well you can play."
"Yes but she hasen't heard this one yet." I objected. I shook my head as if mum had forgotten the obvious.
"Yes Alice, I haven't heard little Alex play this one before." Grandma said. I smiled and kept on playing.
Everyone had always said I was very good at the piano for 7 years old. They said it was the musical blood I got from dad and I always loved it when they said that. Just the fact that I was playing made me feel that part of him was there with us.
"Now, Alex. Play me something you've played before. One of my favourites." Grandma whispered into my ear. I smiled.
"Alright." She smiled back and got up. "Where are you going?"
"I'm just going to start making lunch. You play and it will be a lot easier."
I placed my hands onn the keys and thought of something to play. Suddenly the one about a dog came into my head. I started to play.
The melody drifted through the one story house. Sending pleasent thoughts into our heads. My mum even started to hum along because I had played it so many times. It was nice and sweet and cheerful. Dd said it was trying to reflect what the day was like when the dog found it's bone.
It even seemed to reflect the mood in the room. The sun shone through the window and hit the yellowish walls, sending yellow beams of light onto everyone's faces. I made eye contact with my mum and she smiled. I even started to laugh.
The phone started to ring. Three rings later I heard my Grandma say "Hello?" quietly in the next room.
The was a long pause nd then a "Oh."
"Is eveything alright mum?" My mum asked my gran.
"Uh, Alice. Would you like to come through here please?"
Me and my mum looked at each other and then she went through.
I tried to keep playing but I just kept hearing the pain and sadness in Grandma's voice and the scared look my mum gave me.
Before I knew it I started to cry and I didn't even know why.
