“Hello?” She said.
“Aunt Karen, it’s Hannah.”
“where the hell have you been!” She demanded, “Better yet, where the hell are you!”
“That’s why I’m calling.” I answered.
“Well, get on with it!”
“I’m trying too!”
“Okay,” she replied, “I’m sorry I never gave you a chance to speak. Please go on.”
“I have a question first,” I began, “Have you seen Jake around?”
“No, why?” She questioned.
“Shit, so that is probably him after us.” I muttered. “How’s mom?”
“Hannah, you’re avoiding the story. She’s doing better though.”
“Okay, I hear voices…” I said slowly unsure of how she was going to react.
“Excuse me? What did you just say?”
“I said, I hear voices. They’re ancestors apparently. I left in a hurry because they were telling me to leave, that Jake is after us, Brandon and I.”
“So, let me get this straight,” she sighed, “you’re listening to voices in your head? Voices that claim to tell you that Jake is bad news.”
“Pretty much.”
“Are you stupid!” She screamed into the phone, “If everybody was to jump off the cliff, would you do it to!”
“I’m not doing what other people are doing.” I said as I hung up the phone.
I ran my hand over my face and sighed. Great, she thought I was crazy. I looked up at Brandon who was still sitting at our table beginning to eat his food. He looked up at me and looked at my empty seat and gave me a questioning look which made me laugh. I walked over to him and sat down in my seat.
“So?” He said curious.
“She thinks I’m nuts.”
“Ahh, who needs her? We got this. You and me.” He said as he grabbed my hand.
“Promise?”
“Always.” He said smiling at me, “Now, for a more serious matter. Food!”
I laughed, oh how he can be so... cute one moment, and back to being a typical guy the next. I trust him though, with everything. He’s been there for me as long as I needed. We finished our meal and left. We hit the road again not knowing where we were going, we were just going. Running.
-you’re safe, for now.
-rest.
-go out, have fun.
Huh, the voices are back again. Except telling me some good news, how strange is that?
“Hey, Bran…”
“Yeah?”
“What are we going to do about school?”
We haven’t finished school yet, we just took off that night after Christmas break.
-you have time, re-enroll in school.
-it’s safe here.
‘-you lost him.
“Well we said we weren’t going to go back, right?” He replied.
“Well… I kind of want to go back. I want to finish this year.” I said sadly.
“We could re-enroll in a school in the area if you would like to. Cause I know what they said to you.” He said with a smirk.
“Get of my head!” I began laughing.
We laughed for a bit, and we ended up getting serious again. We decided to re-enroll in the high school in this little town we were currently residing in.
“You should probably call your aunt again. You should tell her that you’re re-enrolling in school.”
“I guess, I don’t really want to speak to her anymore. She thinks of me differently now.”
“Just give her another call, trust me, she’ll be calmer about this once she has time to think about this.”
“I doubt it,” I said not believing anything, “she thinks I’m a freak. Well, I am a freak.”
“Well, if you’re a freak, than I’m a bigger freak than you because I was told look out for this complete stranger and guide her, and keep her as safe as possible.”
I smiled as I looked up at him and hugged him. Ahh, Brandon always had a way of making everything seem rational, and calming. I don’t know what I would do without him if I hadn’t met him. Maybe I would be dead because of Jake. But I don’t know.
