It had all been going perfectly well for the Brighton girls. They had all gotten on like a house on fire; as best as they could after their mum's death and China leaving to Oxford, but when India meets Lousiana's best friend (whom Lousiana is secretly in love with) Alan, who falls in love with her and new girl Vicky and her brother Wayne arrives, life takes an unexpected twist for all the girls, and once more, they find out that their dad has been keeping secrets that could make our break life completely, will the Brightons be able to keep the pieces of everything glued together?
Mum had decided to name us all by places. She liked the idea that we would all make a mark; us Brighton kids. Dad said, she said that we would all be dead famous. Texas, a famous surgeon. China. She's in Oxford. She is learning to a social worker. Chelsea, a worldwide author, getting millions a day; India an actor and singer, and as for me, a famous architect. That was the dream. Dad had used to tell us that every night, before we went bed… Mum died a year after she had India. She had died of cancer. It had been tragic really. Before mum had had Texas and me, she had four miscarriages. She desperately yearned for kids. A big family like her owns. A family where there would be a couple of conflicts, but all around, there love circulated, and everyone no matter what would have each other's back. It was a kind of, 'I may shout at my sister, but you try, prepare to run!'. Mum had finally had us after a long time of trying, and the year after, Chelsea came, and whilst mum was pregnant with India… she had developed a cancer trumor, and it could have been treated, and she would still be alive, but mum… she refused to have treatment, as it would have damaged her unborn baby. Dad said she had leukaemia or lung cancer. I am not sure, but it is one of the two.
We are all too young to remember mum, but China who does, never wants to talk about her. She says that she was there whilst it happened, and she never wants to resurrect those old ghosts, not for anyone. There are no pictures of mum. Dad said that they all somehow got lost. I suppose all you can kind of do is paint a virtual image. Dad said that she had tea creamy skin like all of us. Well, India is an orange creature though. She likes to get tanned too much. She had been tall. We are all tall, apart from India who is short and small. Dad said mum had beautiful hazel eyes that would draw and melt even the holiest and hardest in.
We don't talk about mum much though, as we now understand, and Dad gets upset every time we bring her up. Mum is always at the back of our heads though, and we will never forget her, ever… Anyway, it is as great as it can be without her, and well we are managing.
