CHAPTER 2
I woke up with leaves and dirt matted in my hair. I sat up quickly, and then realized that was a bad idea. My head swam and I leant against the tree. A low growl escaped from my stomach, reminding myself how hungry I was.
I had slept long enough that dusk was beginning to settle in. Again my stomach rumbled and I realized that I desperately needed food. The fire in my throat would not go out, no matter how hard I tried to forget about it. I gently pushed myself into a standing position. One foot, then the other. Walking wasn't so hard.
I squinted my eyes in the fading light, trying to see any sign of life. Nothing. A flash of black darted behind me and I jumped a mile. The chill of the night was beginning to set in. There was a cold rush of wind. I paused quietly and to my surprise I could hear the faint babble of a river. I began to walk towards it, even though I had no idea where I was going. Slowly, it was getting louder.
Walking gave me a purpose, it pulled me out of my slump. Now I had hope that I would make it through, that I would get home again.
The beauty of the forest was beginning to sink in. Lush green trees, colourful flowers and plants. The earth had a golden brown tinge to it.
The shadows of the night were settling in and the light was almost completely drained away.
Curse Aaron, I thought. Him, his stupid drugs and alcohol. Curse him a hundred times over.
Finally, I saw it. The moving water. The fire in my throat began to rage again, and I ran to the river. I knelt down, cupped my hands and drank. The piercing cold was a welcome sensation in my mouth. Again I drank, and slowly the fire was extinguished.
I sat down against a tree. I shivered, I hadn't realized how cold I was. My body temperature grew colder by the second and I could feel myself tensing. I had no control over my mind as the forest became shadows and I sank into unconsciousness.
