"Hurry up, Anna. We're going to be late. We have to be at the airport in 15 minutes if we're going to catch the 8:00 flight," Anna's mom, Heather Grant said.
"I'm coming," Anna replied, appearing in the hall.
"Okay then, let's go!"
They managed to get to the airport on time, and just as they got out of security, their flight for Fresno, California, was called for boarding.
Once she was settled in on the plane, Anna began to think of all that had happened in her life recently that had brought her to this place of loneliness and vulnerability she now found herself in. Her parents had just been through a long divorce, followed by a custody battle. The family cat had just died a month ago, and now she and her mom were moving from one state to another. They were moving because there were too many painful memories in Iowa, and Anna's mom had gotten an offer to work in a veterinary clinic in Fresno. Job opportunities were rare these days and Heather had just gotten laid off at a clinic in Des Moines.
This was going to be Anna's first plane flight, so she was as excited as she was nervous. Before she knew it, the plane started moving, gliding on the smooth ground. Anna had a window seat, so she eagerly gazed out of the window as the plane gained speed. But even as the plane lifted off, she couldn't get her mind off of the cat or her dad. How she longed to see her cat again, or just to hear her purr. Would she ever see her dad again? Did he miss her? Where was he now? Anna's thoughts kept her awake during the entire non-stop flight, even though she hadn't been getting much sleep recently. What is Fresno really like? Will I fit in there?
As the plane started to descend, Anna was filled with mixed emotions and thoughts. Would she like it in Fresno? Would she make new friends? What about her friends in Iowa? How would she keep in touch with them? What would her new school be like? By the time the plane came to a stop, it was all Anna could do not to cry.
Anna and her mom Heather had been to Fresno beforehand to finalize the arrangements on their new house, so Anna wasn't too surprised at the difference between Fresno and Des Moines, but Anna still couldn't believe it. None of it seemed real.
When Anna and Heather got to their new house, they immediately started unpacking. Anna started unpacking some of her things in her new room, while Heather started unpacking some things in the kitchen.
Pretty soon Anna started feeling funny. She started to feel lightheaded. She felt overheated and her heart started to race. Her respiration slowed down, and she started sweating. The ground started spinning underneath her feet, and her limbs went numb. Before the world went black, all she could think was: What's going on, am I going to die?
