The Time is Now
When I woke up, I felt something heavy laying on my arm. It kind of hurt and when I looked to see who it was, it was Lily. She was sleeping soundly until I moved a bit and she woke up looking up at me.
"Why are you sleeping here?"
She pushed her arm in front of her and said with a yawn, "Niall is back so he is sleeping in his room. I didn't have a place to sleep and I love your warmth." She gave me a smile and I gave in, "I see."
"Well I'm going to take a shower so I recommend that you go downstairs with the others."
She nodded and I headed towards the bathroom. I took off my clothes and looked at my wound, then at the mirror. I started the shower and waited it to heat up. Once it did I got in and let the water run through my hair and down my back. I felt a sting down towards my wound and I knew it was normal and just dealt with it.
After I washed up and got out. I dried my hair until it was damp and then I wrapped it around my waist. I looked into the mirror and combed my hair. I saw Nicole's face in the mirror behind me and when I looked around real fast she wasn't there. I looked back in the mirror and it was just a hallucination. I sighed and went back into the room.
I put on some clothes and hung my towel back up in the bathroom. I put my dirty clothes in the laundry and went down the stairs. Everyone was smiling as I saw them sit on the couch.
"Hey Caden. How did you sleep?"
I rubbed the back of my head, "Good, I guess."
"Good. We were all thinking of going to that special place to have a picnic, would you like to join us?"
"Sure." My stomach growled and they all laughed.
"Don't worry, it won't be that long until we go."
I laughed and felt embarrassed.
We left with the basket and blankets. Once we got there I helped with getting things set up so it would go by fast and we could eat already.
Lily, Niall, and I sat on one blanket and the others sat on the other. We had sandwiches, pickles, potatoes, chips, etc. I took some of each and started digging in. Lily stared at me while I was eating and I wanted to laugh.
"Wow, you must've been really hungry."
I just nodded and continued eating.
I heard a noise coming from the edge of the entrance. I sat up and said, "Come out. I know you are there by the entrance."
It was Lacey that came out. She wore a small dress that had no
straps and was red. She twirled her black hair and came closer to
me, "I'm sorry for disturbing you but I just wanted to talk with
I walked over there, "I'm finished so I'll be going back to the cabin with Lacey."
They all waved and I lead Lacey back to the cabin. When we got there she sat down and straightened her back. I sad on the opposite end of her and she spoke, "I ran into your mom earlier and she said she wants to meet you."
"I don't want to meet her though. Tell her that she can call…"
"No she specifically said she really wanted to see you because Shawn is in the hospital."
My heart sank, "You are kidding me right?"
She shook her head, "No, he suffered a heart attack and right now he is in the recovery room, suffering."
I held onto my jeans, "Will he be alright?"
"I don't know. I'm not one hundred percent sure but Nicole really wants to see you and I think Shawn wants to too."
"Then take me to them. The guys don't need to know where I'm at and I'll be back soon anyways right?"
"Yeah you should be. My car is out front so I'll drive you there."
We arrived at the hospital and I went to the front desk, "I'm here to see my dad, Shawn…"
"Yes we have been expecting you, Caden, it is the
second floor, in room two zero five."
I nodded and went straight to the elevator and went to the second floor. Lacey stayed in the waiting room as I go to see my sick father.
When I found room two zero five, there laid in a single bed, looking out the window, was my father. He heard me close the door and looked at me. He smiled. His sickly face staring up at me. He tried reaching up to my face so I grabbed his hand. I held it while we talked.
He sounded like he was going to get out of breath, "I'm glad I get to see my son's face before I'm gone."
I felt tears about to come out, "Don't worry, Shawn. You are going to be okay."
He shook his head, "Dad."
"Call me Dad."
"Dad, everything is going to be fine."
"No I'm not. Everyone says that line before they take their last breath."
"She is wondering around calming herself down. She meant no harm to you."
"Yeah I know."
"She just wanted you to love her."
Tears filled up my eyes, "Yeah I know. I just couldn't find the love I had for her. I'm so sorry."
"No, don't tell me that. Tell your mother that."
"I love you."
"I…I…" before I finished my sentence he was gone. I placed my head on his stomach and cried, "I love you
A doctor came into the room and shut the machine off. He put his hand on my back and told me he was so sorry for my lost. I told him to get lost. I know I seem harsh but I had to say that, I wanted to be alone. I wanted to be alone with my father that I have seen for the third time since my birth.
Nicole bursts into the room and sees her husband lie dead. I was there still by his side and she pulled me back so she could mourn. I stood there and looked down. I clenched my hands into fists and I left the room. The nurses tried to calm me down but I got Lacey and told her we need to get out of here. She understood and took me back to the cabin.
Everybody was out front waiting for me and they all gave me a hug.
"Lacey told us everything. We are so sorry."
I let the tears flow from my glassed eyes and was open to any hugs anyone was willing to give.
A couple hours later I heard the door knock and I opened the door to find Nicole standing there emotionless. She asked if she could come in and I gestured her into the house and she sat immediately on the couch.
I sat across from her and she started the conversation with, "I'm sorry about what you had to see earlier today. I didn't know what gotten in me. I think it was just a wife's instinct when I saw my husband gone."
I muttered, "You didn't have to see him die right in front of you."
"I'm so sorry, Caden. Shawn was the only one I had left."
"It's okay. I didn't get to spend enough time with
either of you."
"I regret giving you up. I dreamed of what it would be like if I kept you and kept you safe with us. To live like a normal, happy family."
I touched her shoulder and I took a deep breath, "Mom, there is no such thing as normal for our family. I am nineteen now and you need to realize that these things are too late."
She started crying harder, "You called me mom, I'm just glad you called me mom."
"I am taking it bits at a time. Soon enough I will come to love you like a mother."
"Yes, but I think it is best for you if you left. You can call me whenever. You don't need to send Lacey to get me."
She shook her head in agreement, "Yes, I will. I love you darling. I will call every single day so I can hear my son's voice." She kissed me on the cheek and stood up. She said good bye to me and left out the door.
Lily came in and gave me a hug, "I'm so glad you guys are on good terms. I was worried about you."
"It's okay, Lily."
Another knock on the door struck me and I was thinking it would be my mother again but when I opened the door it was….
