A short poem about addiction

Have one they say

Offering you the packet

The pressure builds

And you just can't hack it

You cough and choke

And try again

Much better this time

You'll do this again

You think you're immune

Young and reckless they'd say

Do it while you're young

Take the pain away

But now you're on your own

In the blistering cold

You need this hit

No matter what you've been told

The addiction starts

You're moneys down the drain

You know if you don't have one

You'll go mentally insane

And your mum shouts at you

And you shout at your mum

Have another one

Make yourself feel numb

It makes you feel brave

And full of infinite glee

You feel calm and collected

But, are you free?

Desperate for a cure

Your hands start to shake

You fumble for the packet

'Just one more' you'll take

The coughing gets worse

But you can't stop now

You're sucked into this curse

You know you're on your way out

And the realisation dawns

If only you'd said no

Would you be in this mess?

You'll never know
