Beneath this skin
There are nerves
Nerves the feel and send messages
Beneath this sternum
There is a heart
A heart the pumps to sustain life
Beneath these ribs
There are lungs
Lungs which struggle to breathe
Beneath this fat
There is a stomach
This is growing much stronger
For what I’ve dealt with
Beneath this shell
There is a core
Much softer than it’s exterior
In this core,
I think
I feel
I love
I mourn loss
No more
But certainly no less
Than anyone else
Never let the package fool you
You can always be surprised
With the revealing of its contents
