I'd Rather (by Kathryn)

Poetry By: Kathryn

It's funny how people can leave such an impression on us by doing the smallest, most insignificant things or by simply not existing at all.

love is highly overrated
i've come to know and learn
the hard way
because some nights when i drive down memory lane
and slow at our house, i think how
i miss those colorful blinking lights
that poured through the windows onto the
sidewalk
i think i'd rather be in a parking lot
flirting with my eyes and
driving circles around him
pressing my bare foot against the cold metal
and breathing in the music from my stereo
i'd rather be sipping up
every minty promise i was given,
giggling and laughing in the dark about the
magic of the movies
while trying to read the name on your heart
i'd rather be sitting at the kitchen table
sifting through the pages of the herald,
scanning it for you
and finding you right there nestled between
all my lovers' names and faces
in fact, i think i'd rather
walk through the hallway of the mall
and turn to see you sitting on a bench
smiling at me and some how
you end up coursing through my veins and
haunting my mind
you know, i think i'd rather
sit under a tree and listen to you play me a song
you wrote about us
and let the leaves fall in a heart-shaped pattern
on the ground, enclosing us
the more i think about it,
the more i realize that
i'd rather just wait
for you
because, as we both know,
love is highly overrated
