Little Boy: Why is the earth crying?

Lion: Because her children become poisoned, then glass-eyed with death. Because the waters scream and writhe in pain as burning oil pours into their veins. Because the fire’s enchanting flame embraces more and more dead. And because the wind, once proud like a king, has become tipsy and drugged, foggy and unrecognizable.

Little Boy: Why do the animals not dare to hope anymore?

Lion: Because the wolf can no longer howl diffidence at Man, . Because the lionesses’ blood stain waterhole and river. Because the polar bears’ fur no longer blends with the Arctic snow, it blends with the cruel steel of a cage.

Little Boy: If the earth and the animals are dying, then why aren’t you sad?

Lion: Because Hope still breathes her breath against our wonder-filled world. And because Hope never dies…
