Katie has been deaf for all of her life, but then...

Yes, the title is supposed to be spelt like that.
DISCLAIMER: I do not know anything about what is involved when you're deaf, except from a bit of sign language. =]

Katie sat reading. It was her favourite thing to do, other than drawing. In the background, music was playing, and her hand rested on her desk so she could feel the music. This was how she heard music; She was deaf. You wouldn't think so at first. She looked like any other girl. She liked going shopping with her friends, going to the park and other stuff. But then you see her hearing aid, and you instantly know. Well, unless you've been on another planet or isolated for the past eighty years. Katie wasn't wearing one at the moment, even though her mother had specifically told her to keep it on.

But within a millisecond, Katie heard music. She knew she was imagining it, she just knew. No way could this be sound! The doctor had broke the news to her mother when she was just a toddler...

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Daniels, Katie could be deaf for most of her life, if not all of it." The doctor frowned. My mother took in the news that her life was going to get harder. I mean, trying to get into a special school, paying for extra things that would help me. I was playing with wooden building blocks, trying - but failing - to build my house. I didn't know what was going on at all.

The sound must have been in Katie's head, she had convinced herself of this. She looked up from her book, the sound still pouring into her ears - no, head.

"Hmm.." She wondered. Maybe this would test if it was real. She used her two pointing fingers to plug her ears. Sound still came, but muffled. Katie's mouth dropped.

"Oh my gosh.." She plugged and then unplugged her fingers, muffled, clear, muffled, clear. It was real! She could hear! "Oh MY GOSH!! MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!" Katie screamed, hearing herself loud and clear. Hearing herself!

Mrs. Daniels entered the room seconds later with a shock written all over her face in permanent marker. Not literally. It all disappeared when she saw Katie's grin.

"Mummy, I can hear!" She hugged her mum with a deathgrip, nearly suffocating her.

"Ouch, ouch, Katie, please could you get off?" Her mum pleaded.

"Sorry, I'm just so excited, I mean how did this happen? Why? It's-"

"Katie!" Her mum cut Katie off. "Well, sometimes these things happen. It's a miracle, and you are one lucky girl, remember that." Mrs. Daniels grinned.

"I will mum. I know a Miracle is Hear," She smiled.

And they all lived- Oh, wait, this isn't a fairytale. But for the sake of it, may as well end it like that!

And they all lived happily ever after.

Whoever 'they' are...
