A Story About the New Booksie

Short Story By: BooksieGuy
Other

Over the next few days you may see some changes and experience some problems with Booksie as we roll out a major upgrade. We may also need to bring the site down for periods of time as we bring these changes live. We're apologizing in advance.

Once this upgrade is done you're going to have a bunch of new features to make it easier to share your writing and read the work of others.

Look for further updates shortly.

Over the next few days you may see some changes and experience some problems with Booksie as we roll out a major upgrade.  We may also need to bring the site down for periods of time as we bring these changes live.   We're apologizing in advance.

If the site is a bit sluggish, bear with us, we're working on it and it will speed up.

Now, onto the good stuff.  This is a bit of what the enhanced Booksie will give you:

  • A brand new Booksie page that allows you to display your porfolio, choose featured pieces, post News, display any books you have published, and more.
  • A new Read page which provides sorting by genre and type (short story, poem, novel).
  • A rich text editor that allows you to change the size, color, font of your posts and your profile.
  • The ability to embed images and video into your posts and your profile.
  • The ability to submit creative writing posted elsewhere on the Web to the Booksie index.
  • A new comment system that allows unregistered users to post comments and authors to delete comments they don't find appropriate.
  • A new management system for authors.
  • Much, much, more.

Many of these changes came from your comments and suggestions and we'd like to thank everyone.  Once again, we appreciate your patience as we bring these features live.

Thanks Chicka19. Just go to your Homepage. From there you can use the tabs to manage your account, just like you did with the old Booksie. If you want to publish, hit the Publish button. If you have questions, let me know.

Ask and I will tell :). I responded to your question about RSS feeds on your Booksie page. But to let everyone else know, RSS feeds are a way of allowing others to subscribe to your site. So when you post something new, they'll receive the link and be able to read it. Readers can subscribe to RSS through their Yahoo or Google pages or by using an RSS reader.

very kewl indeed!... question?... how do we get back to the Booksie home page?... everything I click on takes me to mine... I go to your home page to see other new writing... so far the only way I find I can go back to it is by typing Booksie.com into my search engine again... I am sure it is just me being stupid and the fact that I am on my first cup of coffee....lol... great job on these changes!

Posted: Sep 27, 2007

Hi ddrandall, just click on the Booksie logo on the top left of any page. That will bring you to the Booksie homepage, as opposed to your homepage.

Good God. This is some major upgrade....but I like it! It's very sophisticated. Not that it wasn't before though. Very nice!

Thanks you! As you can see, you can still also respond to a comment within the comment.

Hi all,

First let me again apologize for the speed of the site. We are optimizing it and it will improve over the next day or two.

Another feature of the new site is that authors can comment on their own post.

BooksieGuy

Posted: Sep 27, 2007

Users can also leave multiple comments per post so that you can start and continue a discussion about a posted piece. No more one comment per post.

As an author, you can delete this post by going to Home/Comments. Find the comment and if you don't like it, it's gone. You now have the power.

Now, onto your questions:

Zephyr, it should help you get more widely read. Your personal page can now be syndicated via RSS which means anyone can add you to their MyYahoo, Google, or Reader pages. Anytime you post something new they'll receive an update.

You and others can also use the icons next to the Like It box to spread your work on sites like Digg, Delicious, Reddit. Pressing those buttons, and submitting to those sites will get you more readers. We've added more code to help search engines find you better. Lastly, you can help my linking to your Booksie page and letting others know about it.

ddrandall - You can get to the Booksie Homepage by clicking on the Booksie logo at the top left of the page. This will always take you to Booksie home.

Hi Totem,

It may take another week to iron out all of the wrinkles. We've been working on improving the speed and the site is now much faster. Now we're tackling the bug queue. No matter how much you test before had, new things crop up when you go live. Thanks for your patience.

BG

cant get to edit page... sometimes when i try go to a story or poem it will link to some other place.. if i try typing in www.booksie.com/users it will go to someone elces editable booksie site....

in a good note a like the new homepage layouts and the submit to digg and that... please fix the minor bugs soon. thank you

Author Comment:

Hi Reaper, We know about the problems and are fixing them. Have you tried getting to edit page by clicking your username below the toolbar? Does it redirect you somewhere else?

so happy for the upgrade. i think this'll be well worth any issues we have with the site.

Just a quick question. I have published a book in print, and I'm trying to add it to my printed books section, but I can't figure out how to do it. Help please!
Thanks

Posted: Sep 28, 2007

Author Comment:

Right now you can only add books by publishing an excerpt of it and adding your book to that published piece. Doing that will automatically add it to your Booksie page. So, if it's a novel, throw up the first chapter, or an excerpt that will get us interested, and then add the ISBN of the book when you're publishing. The rest will happen automatically. Email us with further questions - contact (at) booksie.com

Yeah the sit looks good! Just one problem - i can't publish my next chapter...it goes to some other novel somebody else wrote...it sucks.

Posted: Sep 28, 2007

Author Comment:

Yup. We know about this. We're working on it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

BG

Hi all,

We're still tweaking the site and we're aware of a lot of the bugs you mention - links going to wrong places, publishing problems, formatting, etc. We're working through the list. We've been working on optimizing the site so it loads quickly and now we're going to start hammering out the bugs. If you don't mind, keep posting them and I'll make sure they get added to the list.

Here's a question for all of you. In the original design we had it so the Home menu button went to your Booksie manage page. The Booksie logo took you to the Booksie homepage. Some found this confusing and we have temporarily changed it back to the way it was before. Now, you get to your manage section by clicking Your Username link below the toolbar. Does anyone have a preference? Is this confusing?

Thanks
BooksieGuy

hey! love the new look, but 1 silly question, lol. when i go into portfolio, and all my work is listed, there's a comlumn that ses "featured - turn on" what does that mean? lol. sorry for my blondeness

Posted: Sep 29, 2007

Author Comment:

If you turn it on that work will be featured on your Booksie page in the Featured Work space. It allows you to call out certain work from your portfolio that you want to make sure others see when they come to your Booksie page. Hope that helps.

BG

wow, thanks for the cool new features!

Oh and I liked the orignal way we got to our webpage by clicking on the tab that said your space.

Thanks DarkFairy. Right now you can get to your webpage by clicking your username under the Home button. We'll probably put Your Space back soon.

I know I am going to sound totally stupid, but I go to my profile and it says NEW MESSAGES. How do I READ the messages? I've clicked on it but nothing happens....

help?

Posted: Sep 30, 2007

Author Comment:

The message button sometimes appears when it shouldn't. It's also being fixed. You can see any comments you've received on your writing by going to the Comments tab. Click on your username under the Home button and you'll see the comments tab.

2 things:
One, when I go to my comments tab it is giving me issues. In the drop down menu I click an option, and it will keep taking me back to the same page. Ex: I'm on no author response, and I click on Comments Recieved, Author Response, and it stays at the same page. Help? Also, I tried adding news but it wont show up.

The On/Off is to feature work on your personal Booksie page. You can decide to pull as many pieces out of your portfolio as you want and showcase them.

Your work appears in your portfolio on your Booksie page and also throughout the site. The Popular shows the most popular work for different time frames. The New shows work in chronological order, as they were listed before. We're still working on the Popular listings.

BG

Now I am really confused. when I posted my comment why does it say I am not a registered user? HELP

you must be a bit bored with all the requested bug fixes. So here comes lionheart to the rescue.... and now... a joke[lionheart searches the deepest parts of his mind... to the very center of his brain, where he finds... bread...??]

joke:

Three men were in a plane, and they were going to skydive. They each brang their favourite possessions (don't ask why... a fetish?). One brang sand, the second: knives and the third: a bomb (...).
The first man threw his sand down then jumped himself. When he got to the bottom he found a girl crying. "Why are you crying little girl?" he asked. "I looked at the sun and sand fell in my eyes" was the girls reply.
The second man threw his knives down and then jumped himself. When he got to the bottom he saw a girl crying aswell. He asked: "Why are you crying little girl?" to which she replied: "I was picking flowers and my hands were chopped off" (because apparently he didn't see when he first apporached her).
The final guy threw his bomb down and then jumped himself. When he got to the bottom he saw a boy laughing. The man asked: "Why are you laughing little boy?" to which the boy replied: "My dad farted and the house blew up. [lionheart waits in anticipation for a laugh from mighty booksie guy, hoping he will not be executed fo wasting his time]

Hopefully it will keep it better. We added a new rich-text editor that should help.

I've been through many other site upgrades so know to be paitent and await until it's bug-free before being judgmental. However I can say it's a definite improvement and more complex but that will upset those who like things simplistic. Your site is superior to most because of control and flexibility left with the self-publisher (even more so now). Loved your reply to sineadmc1990!!! Addition of Featured button is brilliant as is freedom to change it. Bugs are devils, aren't they

No, it's not you. It's a bug we are working on. Generally if you have to change the title, it's better to delete the piece and repost. We're working on a fix for this. Sorry.

For some reason, my computer would not let me put comments on your page. So I decided that i would write you a comment to your short story! You are wayyyyyyyyy cooler than the facebook guy, The Myspace guy tom, the all poetry guy, and all them other guys! Just thought you should know! :)

Author Comment:

Why thank you my darlin. Not sure why you couldn't leave comments on my page. What happened when you tried to?

BG

Three things this site needs to work on POST HASTE:

1) You need to install a DELETE CONTENT button in the Portfolio section that ACTUALLY works. I have been trying to delete a writing entry for a month now. No go. Everytime I click the delete button, nothing happens. Not good. If you can't even get basic functions/features to work, how am I to believe your new functions will work?

2) You need a VIEW COMMENT BUTTON in the New Messages section. It's not enough to just reply or delete a comment, YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO READ IT FIRST BEFORE YOU CAN DO EITHER. Again, very basic function. There is no reason I should have to actually DIG UP the actual work that I wrote to check comments left there.

3) I have issues with your BECOME A FAN OF button too. I do not wish to become a FAN of other writers, but sometimes there are folks I would like to 'Follow' or 'Friend' so that I can keep up with their writing. Then if you would like to add a Fan feature no problem. Cuz there are 'fans' out there, I'm just not going to be one of them.

I'm sure I could come up with a couple more if I dig around. As a writer who has been to quite a few other writing sites, I can honestly say Booksie is EXTREMELY poorly designed; completely user UN-friendly.

Sorry you don't like the Fan label.

Sorry you don't like our design but you can't please everyone.

BG

Well...when I tried to leave a comment on your page, the computer talked to me in a deep voice and said "GIVE ME WAFFLES!!!" No, when I tried to do it...nothing happened. I clicked on it like 5 times, and it would never let me type in a message!

Is there anyway of changing how large your profile picture is? I know the question sounds a bit weird, but it seems like the picture I had before was bigger?I enlargened the new one and uploaded it again but it was still small and was a bit difficult to figure out what it was.
Can anyone help me?

Minute Hand

Posted: Nov 12, 2007

Author Comment:

Sorry Minute Hand, there is no way. You can embed images in your profile though and make them as big as you want. To do that, click the image button on the toolbar and put in the url to the image.

Just an add-on to junkdnafiction's comment; I found that there was two copies of one of my stories, so I tried to delete one of them and ending up getting rid of both. Do you know of any way to recover a deleted story, or is it gone forever?

Posted: Nov 13, 2007

Author Comment:

Yeah, there seems to be a bug there. I'm afraid your story is probably gone although I will check. What is its name?

Sorry, we did experience a few problems related to a surge in traffic and new sign ups. It should be solved. We also found the problem with deleting work. When you delete it, you must first delete the chapter piece. Then you can delete the outer description shell. I know it sounds confusing but we did it so that someone doesn't accidentally delete the whole thing.

We're either going to ad a message to clarify this or change it so that work can be deleted from the main delete button.

Posted: Nov 15, 2007

A feww problems:

1) I cant delete my work!!!! I have unfinished work that i decided to abandon, so i tried to delete and it remains there!! I have already read your response to others who have the same problem but i dont get it.......i understand it like binary code...... but i dont understand binary code......

2) Whenever i try to edit something in one of my pieces it never changes :(
I have tried many times, even over long periods of time, but i still have no change in my work and its............................annoying........

3) I need you to read my piece "Plan: Booksie" please :)
I want to hear your thoughts on it :)

4) I know this is something that has been going on for a loooooooooonnnnnnggggggg time, but i still wanna know....... is the featured writing on the home page randomly selected from new pieces? Or do the authors slip a bill under the table? Or is it sponsors? Or is it that they're damn good?

1. You should be able to delete work. But first you must delete any chapters. Everything, even poems and short stories have at least 1 chapter. Novels have more. Delete the inner chapter(s), then you can delete the title information. If that doesn't work, let me know.

2. You should be able to edit. Can you let me know the name of the piece?

3. I'll give it a read.

4. Featured Writing is selected by a popularity algorithim. The more popular your work, the better the chance it will hit the front page. You can make it more popular by emailing it to others, promoting it on Facebook, Myspace, Delicious, Reddit, etc.

I hope that helps.

I like the new stuff, but I'm a little confused about it all...

Play around with it. I think you'll figure it out after a few minutes. Also, take a look at the Help section. If you still have questions, email us.

I have deleted items from my portfolio and it is still there... It wont let me delete anything...

Hi Trainman,

See my response to Lionheart above. Deleting requires that you delete all the inner chapters and then the outer description. We're fixing this to make it easier.

I know that there are some problems and it´s necessary to be patient.I welcome improvements. Thank you very much, Booksie

I love updates, of anything. It means something new and exciting, something to look forward to and enjoy. Of course it can kinda suck when you're waiting for the updates, and I'm not very fond of the subsequent glitches, errors, and the messages that look something like this:

"No dum butt, click THAT button, not THAT one!!"

But it's usually worth it, and in this case the updates are EXTREMELY cool, even if they were already there when I got here. :D

One question. Are you the booksie god? I know you're the booksie guy, but booksie god seems to fit you. Do you moderate booksie all by yourself, or are you several different people?

That was sort of two questions, wasn't it?

That makes three. Right?

Hey there!
Just a random idea... it would be cool to have 'Featured Writer' box on the main Booksie page. It could be taken randomly from the writers list or taken randomly from the top 10% of writers who actively contribute to the site. I don't know, it's just an idea, but it might help to make writers stay and visit Booksie more than other sites, if they have a chance of being a featured writer.
Just a thought!

Hi Matmoo,

Thanks for the suggestion. We are working on some changes to the homepage. Adding Featured Writers is one of the changes we are considering. You're comment helps.

BG

it's great! i love the Booksie web page!! I can't wait to see the new video application!!
So cool!

Posted: Jan 19, 2008

Author Comment:

You can add video now. Just click the Source link on the editor toolbar and insert the video code. You'll have video - voila. You can embed videos from Youtube, etc.

I was wondering if you were going to update where you could move things around, add certain features to your page (like a simple background), pretty much make it more personalized... I don't think you should go myspace extreme, but it would be good for people to see more of what you were like.

Good question. We're working on a bunch of new enhancements and allowing further customization of the Booksie page is on the list. Stay tuned. Thanks for the comment.

BG

Wow!!! Am I really at the end!? It took about 4 years to get down here! But I'm excited! I'm a featured writer! I think the upgrades are good. I like it, but I would like to customize my page a little..just to make it more of my own personality.

Posted: Jan 27, 2008

well, after a million years of scrolling, i hit the bottom. anywhoo i agree.... we should be able to customize it a little more.

I have a question oh answerer of questions who toils in the bowels of the internet; I know that we can insert a picture from a url address into our work, but why cant we put one from our homedrive? If there is a site where they give you url's (because i dont know any) then could you throw one my way?

[lionheart mumbles as he looks up]
FREAKING HELL!! I think ill die here at the bottom... seeing as theres no way i can climb again.

Hi, we don't have private messaging at the moment. We were a little concerned about privacy etc. and so didn't implement it right away. If people really want it we can put it in.

I like to write erotica, can embed erotic pictures?

Thanks

Not at the moment please. Perhaps shortly once we add a better filtering system.

What are your suggestions to "addicted" booksie writers? I guess it's not lethal, right? Terrific site.

Hi. I have a question about the site. I love this site, and I like to go on it everyday during my study hall, but recently they have blocked it because the tags on the site are lke social networking/dating service or something like that, And I was wondering if you could, by any chance, change that so that we can still use it here at school. Would truly appreciate it if you could...

Thanks!

Posted: Feb 20, 2008

Author Comment:

I could give it a try. I don't think we have any social networking tags per se but I will look into it.

when are these features live? Or have they already been installed?

Oh, by the way, great site! Really useful!

Posted: Mar 3, 2008

Author Comment:

Yes, they have already been installed. I'm getting ready to post a new message as we prepare another round of enhancements.

i just got here and am really sad that the site may be brought down ...... but horay for the upgrades!

hey there, i was wondering how do u add a youtube video to your profile page, i can't figure it out.

Posted: May 30, 2008

Hello me again, i figured out how to add the videos to my profile but they aren't coming up, is there anyway i can fix this?

Posted: May 31, 2008

Author Comment:

You should just paste the embed code into the code section of your profile box. It will work. I'll take a look at your profile.

ok I have been wondering, well when we answer our comments, it only shows the little box with the one comment, and some times I can't remember the poem they are talking about Lol. also if they comment on what someone else has said and you can't even see it, you know? so is there any way that we could see the whole poem and old comments when we click to answer them? or would that be too hard to do? would make it alot easier for me anyway, don't know about others.

I agree with Jadey. For me, Booksie is as perfet as it can be. =]
But I suppose, more amazing stuffs cannot be turned down.

(Oh yeah, Booksie have been "down for maintenance" a lot of times && I was just worried that the site is just gonna be removed or something..o.O ...Booksie isn't anywhere near being shut down, right? {Sorry, I just freak out cause I love booksie so much..} )

No, we aren't shutting it down anytime soon. It's just grown so much lately that it's put some strain on our resources but we think we have it fixed. Sorry for the downtime.

Hey!! I was wondering if this site is fully improved yet? I am somewhat new to this site, and I'd hateit if it is demolished! Answer back ASAP, please!

We continue to improve it all the time. But we aren't going to demolish it :).

i just tried to publish something and it said its published but it isnt showing up.

Author Comment:

It sometimes takes a few minutes for it to show up.

I keep trying to put a music player on my profile, and I see some people have, but it won't show up on mine, just a bunch of codes. Any help?

I'm KIND OF new to this and would also like to know if all the improvements are done yet or is there more to come? Thanks, reply as soon as you can, please. =]

Posted: Jun 28, 2008

Author Comment:

You need to embed the music player. Look at the directions for embedding an image. It's basically the same.

We have more improvements planned. Lately, we've been scrambling to keep up with the growth of the site.

Having problems updating my profile bio. The text appears on the edit page but when its updated it doesnt appear on my page.

Help

Thanks

I am sorry but this site is making me mad you have a lot of bugs in the site and i cant even publish anything now. also sometimes (for example of a bug) when your site is moviing slow it will make the letters that are typed go extremly slow to show up when typing

Posted: Jul 3, 2008

Author Comment:

We're working on speeding up the site. It's grown quite a bit lately so we're scrambling to keep up.

Also people on here just promote their pieces on comments board maybe a forum? Where people can talk and not just promote. Though I know it would be more of a hassle for you since you would need moderators but still.

Posted: Jul 3, 2008

Not appeared yet. Have even deleted it from the box and typed it again......

Help yet again...

Thanks

Is there a way one can send a notification within booksie as soon as a new piece is uploaded... i know you have a send email option... but that is time consuming and requires that one knows the emails of the people in booksie they would like to keep updated.

Posted: Aug 16, 2008

Author Comment:

We don't have the yet but will add it to the list. Thanks.

booksie guy, I would like to know why so many adds have been on booksie lately? It sorta subtracts from the whole feel of booksie, and one of the reasons i joined in the first place was because i loved the add free atmosphere. Get back to me soon!

Hi Reaper, we've actually always had ads on the site. We're not running any more than we usually do.

We run the ads to help pay for the site's expenses and for future enhancements. We don't charge users so it's how we keep Booksie running. These advertisers are helping keep Booksie free.

We try to make the ads relevant for writers and readers.

Phew i cant wait lol

Looks like you guys need to check this page more often ;) Anyway If you guys ever end up running out of ideas grab another server and make a a good Forum. I have seen some arguments and some where great. But in a forum they would be easier. (arguments based on say poetry) I know I would be on here ten times more if oyu did. I am positive so would other people.

Thanks for the feedback.

when submitting a project none of my photos will go with it. Although I'm new to Booksie this action has
not presented a problem in other complicated websites.
I find Booksie to be very "unclear" with all instructions. Every action is like putting salt on a
birds tail...it's one big merry-go-round with no place to jump off!!!!!!????????????? every link I use in booksie leads in one direction, back to my page, not to
what I'm expecting to read.

Hmmm. You should be able to put your pictures on. How are you submitting it? Email me at contact (at) booksie.com.

Hi there Booksie Guy! :-)

I'm starting writing mathematical poetry but I can't use math symbols as title. Thank You! ^^

Posted: Sep 12, 2008

Author Comment:

Yes, that could cause problems. The title gets used within the system and putting symbols in it might not work so well. Sorry, it's a limitation we will work to fix.

i deleted a novel, with only one chapter, that shows up two times btw...
but i didnt realize i had to 'delete inner stuff'. and it still shows.
where does this leave me now?

Posted: Oct 10, 2008

Author Comment:

Sometimes it takes a minute for the change to be reflected on the site. I'll take a look and see what's going on.

well, it had deleted from my portfolio.
but viewers can still see it, but when you open it, it's blank.
its showing three times now (after i tried reposting).
