I closed my eyes and gripped my balled my hands into fist's to keep from knocking the table over.My letter, the letter that had taken me,five draft's and countless pieces of parchment, covered in black ink.I shot a death glare at Ella, the girl who had purposely knocked my ink bowl over.I took my letter and walked over to the wood burner,I opened the rusty door and threw the ink soaked letter inside.I watched as the hot flames engulfed the letter.Burning it into oblivion. Then I grabbed the old rag's and wiping up the ink. When I finished,I studied my work. There would still be an ugly black spot on the table, but I had cleaned it the best I could. Then, after I threw the rag's away,I looked at my bag with mistake. It was the only thing I had arrived with when I came to Wood Burrow orphanage. It was the only thing I really considered mine. Then Ella looked over and pretended to be surprised at the mess."Gee Anella you should really be more careful" she said in mock concern. Then she turned to her friends and snickered. Then I lost it.I picked up the bowl that held her ink and poured over her head. Then I put the bowl on her head like a hat."Gee Ella, you should really be more careful" I sneered. Then I picked up my ink stained bag and ran to the kitchen. But I stayed long enough to see the look of frozen shock on her face. When I went into the abandoned kitchen I easily found a large bucket. Then I went outside to the water pump and filled it up.And then I waited forty minutes for the water to boil over the fire. And then I added soap and started to wash my ink soaked leather bag in the soapy water.I must have scrubbed my bag for a good thirty minutes but the ink wouldn't come out of the white leather. The harder I scrubbed, the more the ink smudged.I was about to give up when I heard the kitchen door open.I froze. The kitchen staff should be asleep, and the student's weren't allowed in the kitchen's.I was the only student who dared enter forbidden area's.The footsteps came closer as they rounded the corner to the main part of the kitchen. And to my surprise I saw the Baron, the master of the castle staring at me with a confused look."My Lord!I am so sorry!" I manged to stutter out."What happened here Miss?" he asked softly. His tone did not imply threat. He knelt down beside and studied my ink stained bag."Ella knocked over the ink bowl, and it stained my bag I was trying to wash it out.I'm sorry My Lord,I accept whatever punishment you place on me." I told him bracing myself for my punishment."P...Punishment?" The Baron asked with a look of utter confusment on his face."Whatever for my dear?" he asked.I blinked at his confusment."F...For tress passing, student's aren't supposed to be in the kitchen's" I told him."You had a very good reason to be in here, but yes you are correct.Student's aren't permmited in the kitchen.I won't place any punishment on you Miss" he told me."So you won't hit me?" I whimpered."Hit...Hit you?Why in the name of Freshly, would I hit you?" He asked."Has someone hit you before?" he asked me concern covering his aging face."The school teacher and guards hit us" I whispered to him."Well I will have them removed immediately" he told me with a smile."Do you need any help?" he asked me,indicating to my bag."The stain won't come out" I said with wilting look on my face."I have some thing that might do the trick" the Baron said, with a twinkle in his gray eyes.He went to the cubords and pulled out a bottle of bleach. He poured a small amount in the wash bin and the soapy water reacted immediately, swirling with the white liquid. The I started to wash my bag agin and this time the ink stain came out, leaving my bag white and clean."Thank you my lord" I said breathing a sigh of relief. Then I remembered something."Sir" I said nervously."Yes my dear..er...What is your name dear?" he asked me."Anella" I told him."I was wondering if you could tell me when the Choosing day is?" I asked him, biting my lip while I waited for him to answer."My dear Anella" the Baron said seriously "The Choosing is tomorrow" he told me.My eyes widened as I remembered everything that needed to be done."Your guardian has instructed me to give these to you" He told me and handed me a package I hadn't noticed before."T...Thank you Sir" I stuttered wondering what it was.I dumped the water outside and the Baron bade me goodnight, and wished me luck for tomorrow.I smiled and thanked him.My mind was racing at the thought of the choosing. The Choosing is a ceremony that took place when a group of kid's turned fifteen. The crafts master's from all over the country,Batteschool master ,the cook's etc, came to choose the kids to be apprenticed. It was all there fears, that they would not be chosen wouldn't be doomed to a life of farmwork.I was feeling nauseous at the thought of not getting the craft I wanted.I wanted to be apprenticed my the Shadow Master. He was a protector that was highly trained in the art's of camouflage,Knife throwing, and archery.I was actually thinking about running away if I didn't get the craft I wanted.I had never known my parent's so I had noon's footsteps to follow.I was aching to be a Shadow Master's apprentice. As I climbed the stairs to my bedchambers,my thought's drifted to the package I had under my arm.It was soft,so I thought It was some type of fabric.I set the package down on my bed and started to open it.The first thing I saw was a peice of paper.I picked it up and read it.It was my adopted guardian's handwriting.

Dear Anella

This outfit belonged to your mother, she wanted very much to be a Shadow Master as well, your mother would be amazingly proud if she was here. Her name was Fenella.Love Angela.

And just as I was about to put the note down something fell on the floor.A picture.Of my mother. She had the same fiery red hair as me and the same startling green eyes, but there was something in her eyes that I didn't have.A hint of mischief,a warning that something unexpected might happen.

Then I took the outfit out of box.It took my breath away.It was a midnight blue dress that dragged a little on the floor. It was strapless, but looked as if it was made of midnight itself. Then I pulled out the cloak and gasped. It was black, but not a cold menacing black,it looked like the black of the night sky on the night of a full moon.It fit perfectly. And then I pulled out the final item.A pair of soft leather boots. They looked waterproof, and they came up to my knees. The entire outfit together looked amazing, and my fiery lock's spilling out from the hood. When I looked in the mirror half of my face was covered by shadow.making my green eyes seem dark and evil.I went over to the bookshelf and pulled out a leather book. And for about the thousandth time read over the story of Rosalie Foster. She was a Shadow Apprentice of extreme power, she had been trusted by everyone. It was said that she was extremely beautiful, and she caught the attention of every male she passed.Except for one.The Evil Winter prince.Prince Luke. She fell in love with him,and she abandoned everything to be with him,she turned against everything and everyone she cared about. And on their wedding day as he went to say his vow,he tried to kill her,so she killed him,and everyone at the wedding. Then it was said she ran off and was never seen again.I looked at myself in the mirror and there,in the half light, vowed I would never be like her.

I stood perfectly still as the Crafts Masters entered the room.We bowed said the anthem, and then the choosing started.I was dead last.It went on forever.Ella got picked to be a chief's apprentice,Rover went to Battle School. So on.When It was my turn I felt heard myself wishing I could dispensary. And as soon as Horace got chosen, all eyes on me.I stepped forward and cleared my throat."Anella Foster,Shadow's Apprentice" a murmur went through the crowd. No one else had wanted to be a Shadow's apprentice. And then the Shadow Master stepped forward."I will think about it over night,Miss Foster" he said in a solemn voice.I bowed,"Thank you my Lord" I said in a small voice. And stepped back.I felt like dying. That was as good as a "Request Denied".I left the room with a heavy heart.I decided to skip dinner I was to depressed to eat anyway. As I was heading up the stairs I heard someone say my name.It was dark, and I looked around, deserted. It was coming from the library.I put up my hood and slipped across the hallway using the shadows as my cover.I pressed my ear to the door and listened."We haven't had a Shadow Volunteer since Fenella Foster!" It was the Baron's voice. My eyes widened at the sound of my mother's name."I am well aware of that, the question is,if I apprentice her will she end up like the other's?"It was the Shadow Master speaking now."We can do nothing but try Ciarnan" I heard the Baron say.And I quietly got back to the stairs before the door opened. The Shadow Master approached me."I have accepted you as my apprentice Anella".I bowed "Thank you My Lord this is an incredible honor" I said formally."From now on you will call me Cairnan" he told me."Thank you Ciarnan"And with that he turned on his heel and walked away.I didn't get any sleep that night.I was kept up by visions of my mother and how she died. And I sat up gasping in bed as it hit me.Nobody ever actually said that she died. She might still be alive. They told me she was gone.No-one ever said that she was actually dead.

I hit myself on the head.IDIOT!It took me fifteen years to realize that!I picked up the picture of my mother. And in the darkness I wondered if maybe I didn't belong here.Maybe I wasn't an orphan."Where are you?" I whispered. And I fell asleep with my mom's image in my mind.

I took a deep breath in and knocked on the door of Cairnan's cottage. The door opened almost immediately and he ushered me in,and I found myself standing in a tidy living room.He pointed to a room at the end of the hall and told me that it would be my room."What do you want me to first? " I asked him.He raised an eyebrow. And handed me a broom. And he dissapeared for a moment and reappeared with an axe in his hand."Where are you going?" I asked him."To chop wood" Cairnan said gesturing to the axe."No,I did not become a Shadow apprentice to be treated like a weak girl.I can chop the wood" I said giving my Master a challenging stare. He handed me the axe.I chopped the wood and stacked it into a neat pile.I filled the basin with water and I made stew.(Witch Cairnan said he enjoyed).I cleaned the cabin untill it sparkled. And when I walked into my room Cairnan was standing there looking at the photo of my mother. He turned to me and gestured to the photo."Who is this?" he asked."Fenella Foster,my mother" I told him."Where did you get this?" he asked me with a blank expression on his face."My guardian" I told him.He set it back down on my dresser."What was she like?" he asked me innocently.I felt my eyes sting with tears."I don't know I never met her,and if I did I don't remember" I told him forcing the tears to stay in my eyes."What about your father?" he asked me."I don't know what he looks like,my guardian said he left before I was born".I told him.I walked over to my dresser and put the photo back in my bag.And when I turned around my Master was gone.Like he was never there to begin with. And in the day's that followed,we acted like that conversation had never happened.

Day's,weeks, months passed quickly in my training with my Master.I learned to throw knives with deadly accuracy,I learned to be deathly with a bow,and I learned the art of camollage.I went to the farm and got myself a horse named Bella. My Master, not one to give out praise told me that I learned and perfected faster than any of his student's before me.I made the meal's and when I was not practicing,I went into the forest to hunt.I had taken down mice rabbit's deer, and once or twice,a moose. It was on one of these day's that I came upon a cottage in the woods. It was very deep in the woods, the only explanation was that whoever lived here wasn't very friendly.I turned to walk away when the door opened, and out stepped a boy about my age,he was holding a bow and pointing it right at me.I drew my bow and pointed it at him.We stood there for a while, and when I realized he wasn't going to shoot,I lowered my bow and put my hand's up in a sign of surrender."I'm not going to hurt you,but in my defense you are pointing a weapon at me" The boy grinned and lowed his bow."In MY defense you are trespassing!I have every right to point a weapon at6 you" he said, but he was grinning so I knew he wasn't serious."I'm Ariella" I said. When I first meet people I don't tell them my first name,I tell them my middle name,so if they come after me,they can't find me."I'm Ash" he said.I slung my bow over my back and walked up to him,I offered him my hand and he took it,a very formal greeting to what happened two seconds ago."How old are you?" I asked him eyeing his quiver."Fifteen I'll be sixteen in a few months" he told me."Me to" I said."Why do you live all the way out here?" I asked looking around."I found this abandoned two years ago,I needed a place,no-one lives here." he told me."Want to come in?" he asked gesturing to the door.I hesitate for a moment, should I go into a complete stranger's house?I decided to,with the comfort of being able to grab my bow at any time."Don't worry,I don't bite" he joked."No but you will draw your bow" I said slipping inside."It was a cozy place with sturdy furniture, and comfortable thing's.He told me to wander around while he made tea.I wandered into the bedroom,It had a large bed and a sign was hung above it.It said "Habeo ab accingo abeo ancile, abisilo albusaura, frequento at abe praetereo"."Cherish the ones you have, for someday, they may be gone"."Can you read Latin?" Ash asked, suddenly appearing beside me.I nodded."What does that say?" he asked me.I repeated it to him.He nodded and offered me some tea.I accepted and we were soon sitting in the living room."It must get lonely here all by yourself" I noted and Ash nodded."It get's lonely, but I never went far,for fear of losing the house" he told me."I live about three miles north" I told him and his eyes widened."You were that close all this time?" he exclaimed and I smiled and nodded."Your not like other girls are you?" he asked and I thought about it."Well, not in the sense that I want to wear poofy dresses and carry fan's,I thing that,if you can move, you should be doing something useful,or at least something you like. You only get one life, you need to make it what you want it to be." I said looking at him and feeling at ease."But isn't there something you love about being a girl?" Ash asked me waiting expectingly."Well..." I said giggling "there is one thing...But it's stupid" I said"It can't be that bad" Ash assured me."I love my hair,I wouldn't cut my hair for anything." I said and it was true,my fiery red waist length hair was my pride and joy.It had never been cut,and I took amazingly good care of it."Your hair is pretty amazing" Ash said "But you know what I love?Your eyes"."Thanks Ash that's a wonderful lie" I told him smirking.Ash's face went from smiling to horrified in a second."I'm not lying!I love your eyes!Would I lie to you?" he said."I don't know,I've only known you for half and hour" I said teasingly."Well then you have to trust me,I would never lie to you" he said giving me a look of awe."What about you?" I asked him."What about me?I know I'm amazing" Ash said grinning from ear to ear."Your a dork you know that?I meant, what's something you've never told anyone?" I said crossing my arm's and smiling."You cannot laugh at me okay?" he asked me.I put up my hand in an oath."I swear I will won't laugh at you".He took a deep breath in,"My real name is Ashylln Flames".My eyes widened at the sound of his name."THE ASHYLLN FLAMES?As in THE BEST archer in the WORLD?" I said my eyes so big I was scared that they would pop out of my head."Well yeah I'm pretty good at archery" he said modestly."Pretty good?YOUR AMAZING!" I yelled."Ariella, calm down!" he said laughing."Right sorry...sorry" I said."Can you come home with me?I'm a Shadow's apprentice,my Master would love to meet you" I proposed giving him and 100 watt smile."Sure" he said."Great!" I said leaping up and grabbing his arm, pulling him towards the door."Um mm Ariella" he said."Yeah" I said looking at him happily."That's the back door" he said hiding a smile."Right,I knew that" I said going in the opposite direction. It took about half hour to get to my cottage and when we got there I was so excited to see Cairnan's reaction that I could barley breath.I grabbed Ash's arm and pulled him inside."Cairnan,I'm home,I brought someone you might want to meet!" I yelled. And before I could blink Cairnan was standing in front of us.How did he do that?"Ash,this is my Master Cairnan,Cairnan this is Ashaylln Flames" I said smiling from ear to ear."Pleasure to meet you Shadow Master" Ash said extending his hand."The world's best archer and polite, you are a fine young man" Cairnan said shaking his hand,And I new after almost a year with him, that that was the equivalent of him jumping up and down from joy."You know if you wanted I could train Ariella" Ash said politely, but his eyes said,"I'm going to train her"."That would be delightful" Cairnan said.We were just about to go outside to train when Cairnan said something that almost made me die of bombardment."Ahh yes,and Ashaylln?" Cairnan said."Yes Shadow Master?" Ash answered."Keep your hands off my bow,and keep your hand's off my apprentice" he said cooly.Ash gulped."Yes Shadow Master" he said smiling weakly.I turned around and I could see why.Cairnan had a way of making himself look giant, and making you feel like an insingnifigant bug. That's the look he was giving Ash now.Ash gave an awkward bow and we scurried outside in record time."Sorry about that" I told Ash in a whisper,so Cairnan wouldn't hear."We should get started" Ash said completely ignoring my apology. He shot the bulls eye once rolled shot the next target backflipped and shot and arrow so accurately it went through through, and split the other arrow. He finished turned to me and said something that made me want to take his bow and break it over his head."Think you can do that?" he said smirking."Ash,as much as I hate to say it,I don't think I can do that without breaking at least two bones in my body" I said glaring at him,my voice dripping with sarcasm."Sure you can,it just takes practice" Ash said flashing me a smile that made my stomach flip inside out.We spent the entire afternoon practicing, and when it was time for dinner,I said goodbye to Ash and he invited me to visit him tomorrow.I went inside to find a meal of moose and, salad waiting for me."Thanks Cairnan,I forgot about dinner" I apologized.Picking up my fork."Well you looked busy, with the Flames boy" he said his voice dripping with sarcasm."Why don't you like him?" I asked him putting my utensils down."I never said I didn't like him,and you are not in any position to be making false accusations" Cairnan said trying to end the conversation. But I wouldn't give up that easily."Oh really?Keep your hand's off my apprentice? What the Hell was that for?" I asked his giving him an accusing glare."Someone had to say it" he said cooly once again, trying to dismiss the subject."No it didn't need to be said!It was embarrassing!" I said my temper getting high."Your my Master!Your possessedly to teach me!I've been here almost a year and I'll ive done is house work, and learn how to throw stupid knives!" I yelled getting up from my chair."And to use a bow" Cairnan reminded me."I learned how to do that myself,I made my own bow!All you do is sit back and watch,I finally make a friend, and you scare him off!Your not my dad!" With that Cairnan's face went from a blank mask to a flicker of sadness, anger and silence."I say that because I care" he said in a soft voice."WELL CARE LESS!" And with that I grabbed my bag my quiver and ran outside into the cool December air.

When I first meet people I don't tell them my first name,I tell them my middle name,so if they come after me,they can't find me."I'm Ash" he said.I slung my bow over my back and walked up to him,I offered him my hand and he took it,a very formal greeting to what happened two seconds ago."How old are you?" I asked him eyeing his quiver."Fifteen I'll be sixteen in a few months" he told me."Me to" I said."Why do you live all the way out here?"
