Kurt Forbes and Maddison Larimore. Both what I like to call "noobs" in the military. They didn't know it at the time but they had a future together that resembled a roller coaster. My mother, Maddison, was standing in line for the restroom at a party while my father, Kurt, was reading a pornographic magazine at a table nearby. My father caught my mothers eye and she walked over to him to discover that he was looking at an unshaved "legs spread" model. "Oh my god" mother exclaimed, repulsed. Father, expecting her exclamation of disgust to be towards him and the genre of his reading selection, ignored her. "If I knew my legs would be spread out for a picture to be seen of my vagina, I'd at least shave a little," she said. And that night, they bonded.Later that evening, father asked mother out on a date. A few dates later, they got some disappointingly unsurprising news. Mother and father were in the kitchen doing the dishes at my grandmothers house. Intense, nervous looks were exchanged between the two of them. "Are you two lovebirds almost done in there?" asked my grandmother from the living room. "Yes, mom," mother replied "Um, I think it's probably best to cancel plans tonight though." "Oh?" grandmother replied. "Yes, I shouldn't be drinking anyway." Grandmother shot mother a look of shock, and dissapointmest. Then a look to father as if she wanted to kill him. " Maddison, please don't tell me you're pregnant. And so young?" "I'm sorry mother, there's nothing we can do about it now." "And she was pregnant with you, correct?" No actually, please, don't be so rude as to interrupt. "My apologies, continue." In the next nine months, a lot of things happened in between shopping for baby supplies. Mother met the in laws, married father, dropped out of the military, and mother, father, and grandmother moved to- excuse me - were stationed in Missouri. "I'm sorry, 'stationed in'?" Well when your in the military, someone else gets to decide where you live. It's really an unfair system. It was kind of ironic, though, for them to get Missouri, that's where my mothers from. Anyway, that's where my sister, Zoe Portland Forbes, was born. And I suppose that's all I have to say about it, my parents meeting. Everyone knew from the beginning things weren't going to work between the two of them. I wish they would've just stopped where they started. I know what you're going to say, 'oh, but is they would've stopped there, you wouldn't be here'. And that's my point exactly. The incident wouldn't have happened, I wouldn't be here- talking to you. Don't take offense to that. "well, Ms. Forbes, that's not what I was going to say at all, though." Good.
