Never Truly Apart

Poetry By: Alan Dale Dalby

A poem about a relationship that has been over for a while, yet still impacts at least one of the two envolved. I told someone the other day that I could never write a poem. As a writer, I decided that was the wrong attitude, so I tried my hand at it. It isn't very polished, but hopefully some of you enjoy it.

My mind that won't stop ticking,

My soul that seems to speak,

They bring back things not quite forgotten,

That keep me from my sleep.

I cannot dream the future,

I can't block out the past,

A fire burns inside me,

It seems forever it will last.

My heart is not as broken,

Ever slowly it has healed,

For when the sadness strikes me,

I refuse myself to yield.

Toss and turn as I do,

I hold on to my tears,

So many have been spent on you,

I need to spare a few for moments in future years.

Yet don't think I've forgotten you,

Nor that I ever will,

Moving on is simply what we do,

I'm making my way up to the top of the hill.

Your face it fades a bit each day,

Til your smile is all I see,

When I close my eyes I understand,

We were never meant to be.

Our hearts they can forgive us,

Never can they forget,

One thing my heart is certain of,

Not a moment spent with you will I ever regret.

Slumber finally takes me,

My mind finally turns out its light,

I wish you beautiful dreams as my conscious fades,

Wherever you sleep tonight.
