Tragedy of "friendly fire"

Twenty-six people killed

Mistaken identification

Friendly blood is spilled

Clinton expressed regrets

As all America paled

Two helicopters shot down

No heroes hailed

What of "enemy fire"

Countless numbers killed

Correct identification

More blood is spilled?

No expressed regrets

As loved ones paled

Helicopters shot down

Many heroes hailed

Is fire ever friendly?

Misdirected all our woes?

Expressed regrets ironic?

When human nature is the foe?

Yes I remember it well and this expresses the sentiments of many I would guess.

Wow! Only just posted this Irwin. Events like these, because at the time I wrote something about them (or my reaction) only seem like they happened yesterday. I have many such poems.

I love this poem. Having many family and friends over
there fighting the war in Iraq!

Thanks Michael, personally I think conflict is unavoidable because of the "baddies" - if only the world was made up entirely of people wanting peace. Best wishes to those you know in Iraq, may they all return home safely.

Very powerful and moving.

I have a friend driving an APC in Iraq and worry about him a lot.

Although I do not approve of the war I support the soliders brave enough to go out and fight it.

There is an endless cycle of violence and destruction in the human nature and no fire can ever be described as "Friendly"

Support the soliders who also pray for peace.

Peace

Boneman

Thanks Boneman for reading and comment. I too, support those who fight, an often thankless task. Human nature is truly mystifying at times.

Wonderful passion.

It is frightening but then I come to Boksie and see all the goodness and kindness of heart and wonderful creativity here and my heart sings.

Ha, the irony of friendly fire, as you say can any fire be friendly? Sometimes war is a necessary evil, and sometimes there’s just no reason or need for it. And of course there r so many innocent victims in war. In its own way this is a beautiful poem which highlights for me the brutality and sheer craziness of war.

Matthew thank you for reading this, I think it is so hard to disagree with the sentiments within.

great write with so much passion and focus on the idiocies of government. I applaud this poem with a thousand angry fists. Friendly fire is the same as enemy fire except for one thing. the enemy knows what they are doing!

Wolffe I appreciate those comments. As I concluded - sadly - "human nature is the foe"

I loved it. Nicely done poem, thanks for bringing it back.

Having a cousin (godfather) killed by "Friendly Fire" in Vietnam on September 1, 1971 it touched a personal cord. At the young age of seven I wondered why they called it friendly fire (like the verse in the Guns and Roses song...what so civil about war?)

I remember that day the blackhawks went down in northern Iraq. Operation Provide Comfort, there's irony.

Like one of your readers said (support or non-support of the war) Support the Troops.

We have new uniform shirts at the fire department for Fridays (red) in support of the troops.

Thanks again. Ted

Ted I doubt if many would condone "friendly fire" although it is one of the unfortunate things that can happen in a war. Sorry to hear about your cousin. Thanks for reading, you spent some time on my page and I am most gratified.
