Predator media displays the horrors
that happen to other people
not me
I see bewildered hurt
in the eyes of wasted aids victims
misunderstood pain of anorexic women
and the anguish of their dark-skinned sisters
babies clinging hopelessly to empty breasts
The images touch me
yet I am untouched
a mere onlooker
as were the innocent office workers
when a crazed gunman went on a rampage
other people sat alone that night
not me
Terror trucks plough into suburban homes
jumbo jets drown out city lights
and with them
the hearts, the hopes, the dreams of
so many people
I wasn’t one of them
Other people’s children
wander lost and lonely through jungles of eucalypts
fall prey to evil perpetrators in playgrounds
live with inevitable death clutching tiny fingers
other people’s children
not mine
snuffed out with one lethal dose of heroin
one wild and silly drag with a police car
or are gone with a sad and simple suicide note
Gourmet media provides the pictures
I’m never in them
so said all the other people
once upon a time

sorry, will fix up format later - off to work right now. First line should not be in small print.

It's a nightmare at the moment - Booksie that is! I love the poem it rings so true. It never happens to us until it happens to us, then we become part of the statistics, one of the images, a fragment of humanity, (steady boy). Hope work went ok.

Thanks Irwin, work was fine and I appreciated your comment about this poem. I sometimes find it difficult to comprehend the "bad luck" some people have. I think our worst "media" nightmare was when we lost a haystack and a machinery shed (near the haystack) in a fire although only "hit" the local news.

Captures a part of life well

Thanks Jborrti, reality can be harsh and the media loves to pounce on the harsh things.

"If it's bloody it sells," and that's the most complimentry thing I can say about the media. You expressed the terror of it well. Thanks for the opportunity. rainy

I have often yearned to become a journalist..but for what? Thanks for comment rainyman.

Media has always used other's misery for it's own benefit....always....

i do pray however that through Media people will be attracted towards the positive things as well like donating towards organisation like WORLD VISION and adopting orphans....people should see through falseness....and accept the truth and only truth.....

I agree Prathibha that media can do good as well. Thanks for reading!

Wonderfully descriptive and so, so accurate. Sex and horror sells or so they say. It's just a way of making people feel better about their own lives to read about the suffering of others. One of the many reasons I no longer buy newspapers.

Jak thanks for going "back" to read this one, I think again very relatable to everyone. I believe there is a person in Australia who is "selling" a service to make you feel good about reading "bad" news. (that is what our world has come to!)

Anna - because you stopped by to visit I discovered you, and I like what I'm reading. This piece is so true, and well put. Thanks for sharing!

Jack so glad you are finding a few pieces you like. Likewise. This is what is so wonderful about booksie, it is a vast web of writers but we do get to "find" quite a few - stumble upon them often - whose work appeals. Thanks for the kind comment.
