Her frustration
fills the waiting room
not as mine
faint, foolish niggle
directed merely at the waiting
Hers clings
moment by moment
follows her every footstep
infinitely demanding, de-energising
all consuming, no emotional escape

Today,
smothering even the love
she must divide so many ways
omitting herself frequently from the equation
helplessly willing
restless limbs, active minds
to impossible stillness
(is it her crowded limbs
mind, she really pleads to?)

Futile frustration
overflows
in the waiting room

I offer a sympathetic smile only
faint, foolish
never suggesting for a moment
my understanding

Hate waiting! More so now I'm older and time's running away. I love the last verse.

Thanks Irwin. many things can trigger a poetic thought or two. Our life is pretty full on so lately any "waiting" sees me sipping on a cool drink and reading the paper these days!

I can completely understand! There's always that one mom that must be having a really bad day. We cannot assume judgement on other people out there, because we have not spent one day in their shoes. Like Irwin said, the last verse says it all; to understand, rather than trying to be understood. (Comes from the prayer of St. Assisi)

Thanks MAmber Conrad, perceptive comment. As the song says "walk a mile in my shoes" and then there may be an inkling of how it is for someone else but we will never truly know.

All things come to those who wait

Thanks Zephyr for kind comment.

Beautiful balance in this poem. We tend to forget sometimes how we are not infallible. You were able to convey the annoyance an discomfort felt in the room (by all parties present), but also a dawning understanding of having really bad days of your own. I'm reminded of the phrase, "let he who has no sin cast the first stone." (Is that right, haha, I think I misquoted). Anyway... again, I loved it, of course. Take care.

Etherealle what a thoughtful comment and I'm glad this poem conveyed to you the message I intended. It is lovely having people read my not so recent poems instead of the latest always (I know this gets really hard on booksie where there is just so much to read!)

As a mother, all i can say is that I empathise with the mother in this one....
being a mom is a like being so close to GOD

Thanks Pratibha, there is so much responsibilty and care in motherhood, you are right, a very "god-like" role.

I am touched by the theme. Mothers will always be Mothers and I pray to GOD to take care of her ....since Mothers all over the world are same with similar feelings ....
May GOD give each Mom the strength to be just like a "MOTHER."

A beautiful prayer Pratibha, mothers are such special people.

This was a beautiful poem and so true. Teach me, Lord, to wait.

"patience is a virtue" as the old saying goes. People these days are more and more impatient. Again, thank you so much for reading.
