I didn’t receive my invitation
to the Poet’s festival
although the host town of
this seemingly fabulous, academic frolic
is only twenty minutes drive away
(this weekend!
Didn’t somebody know I was free?)

I thumb enviously
through the festival booklet
(oh yes,
I can PAY to go there with the masses)
creeps in my inadequacies
read poet attendee biographies
“published fourteen books of poems”
“renowned” “sought for readings”
“won numerous awards”
“internationally published”
(does Booksie count for me?)

…it all sounds a bit pompous…yet inviting

Could I mull with famous and “real” poets?
(poets by title, not hobby writers?)
Could I exchange with them
high brow words and thoughts?
be accepted as an equal?

Would it matter I have no university degree
in literature, no knowledge gleaned from
attending countless poet’s festivals,
no grand volumes of poetry “out there”
(for high school students to
tear their hair out over?)

Would my genuine love of poetry
and my passion for writing poems do?
Would my fascination with words
my humble poetic offerings
built of love, compassion, pain,
observation, experience,
be good enough?

Could I too, wear a label “poet”?

or am I just a person who writes poetry
never to receive my invitation
to the poet’s festival?

I remember meeting two locally famous 'poets' I was reading other people's work at a competition at which they were the judges. They read their own work - badly! and it was noticeable. Each to their own I guess and I never received my invite to the Poetry Society Dinner either. I like your poem.

Thanks Irwin - I must say though I have a lot of admiration for poets who perservere enough to get their name out there. I did have a couple of years where I went all out to try and get published but in Australia it is so tough, small struggling literary magazines wanted you to suscribe first, most couldn't pay you, it cost money to enter competitions (and prize money not that great at the end of the day) - poet pauper is the name of the game alas and along with the inevitable rejecton slips as well I sort of lost interest in trying. So yes, I do admire those that persevere. I have never given a reading but it is hard to imagine a poet reading their own work anything but beautifully because they could put the emphasis where it is warranted etc. Sorry for long response!

I like this poem. Well, my personal opinion is that you are already at the Poet's Festival. It's your for the taking....who needs them. Your the creator of the Poet's Festival, so invite who you want. Status or no Status.....I love your poems and everytime I read one, your a famous poet to me.

I love this reply Kred35 - yes, we are, each and every one of us at the Poet's festival. I can invite all my booksie fans.

Comic fans have ComicCon, Harry Potter fans have the Yule Ball, someone needs to throw a Booksie Convention! I think anyone who proves his or herself to be a writer/poet/artist at heart should definitely deserve such a title!!!

And, just like the reviewers preceding, I think Booksie itself is a poet's festival.

Well I agree, not that I have ever been to the formal festival. Thanks for reading.

I've never been to one of these festivals, but I probably don’t belong in one. It's easy for people to look down and make judgements and assumptions based on their academic skills. You don't need anything but life experience to be able express your thoughts in writing, which I happen to think you do incredibly well! I think you are most worthy of being ladled a poet! ~ Nixie

Thanks Nixie, and likewise you are also not only deserving, you are a poet I already admire - well you know I only ASSUME it is all academic and pompous, the festival that was - the leaflet certainly came across that way, but anyone who loves and writes poetry can't be all that bad?

A true poet writes... they posess a passion for the arrangement of words. The beauty of their words is in the eye of the beholder... the listener... the reader. I have read many a poem on booksie that 'in my humble opinion' was far better and more meaningful to me than anything published to great acclaim that I had read out in the 'real world of published poems'!

So... keep writing as you ARE a poet and a writer, my dear Anna! And a mighty fine one as well.

As you have probably guessed by now... I loved "Poet Festival Blues"!! Peace.....Jerry

PS: Guess what? I was selected (along with three other poets), to do a public "Poetry Reading" of five of my poems at a local 'Arts Cafe' on April 25th!!! I'm a tad nervous but terribly excited about the prspect of sharing a few of my poems with a live audience!

Thanks Jerry for the comfort of your words. I loved the way you put that. Good luck with the readings. Your poetry is so beautiful I'm sure it will go over well.

Anna , I don't care for this ! I feel myself like a poet inside my heart. People like to expose themselves in places like this but there's nothing better than our own judgement .

Wonderful comment Jborrti. I haven't been in to your page for a while, I will wander in now.

Every once in a while , every 'hobby' writer begins to feel they don't add up into the world of poetry . Sure , we're not ' pro ' at this ' job ' ,but doesn't receiving insight still feel as great ? Even if they're not from big - time poets ? Well , I guess it depends on the opinion, right ? And the opinion is ' We are poets , end of story !'

I love your opinion and I agree - sometimes I would love to see what it would feel like to be a "big-time" poet - even for a day!

I attended the ISP convention in Vegas last July... listening to others speaking their words on paper was quite inspiring... when I got back... I wrote "Our Pens Of Blood" as we all share the ink in our pens... loved your thoughts... write on my friend!

Wow! I am sure it would be inspiring. I will go and read your poem. Thanks for comments.

My poems have no rhymings and i cannot help but doubt if my poems make sense...

Believe me, your poems make PLENTY of sense. Emotion and observation doesn't have to ryhme.
