Shyness
A curse upon the tongue
A genetic inclination?
Forged in the fires of schoolyard fascism?
Contributory
My intelligence
Their jealousy
My fear
Caged inside for years
Words held back
Battles fought daily
Clawing to get out
Held within
By me
A freeing
A chink in the armor
A letting go
Bit by bit
Every day
One at a time
Moment by moment
I remember you with disdain
I wish I could leave you behind
You cling
You remind me
You will not let go.
I step out in front of you
I am too fast
You are my old life
But still
